Sorry for starting a whole thread on this but a search turned up no results.

I am looking to do a Star Alliance redemption in the far future using KF miles - route:

MEL-SIN-ADD-(stop)-JIB
ASM-ADD-SIN-MEL

ADD - Addis Ababa
JIB - Djibouti
ASM- Asmara (Eritrea)

The MEL-SIN-ADD route could be different but I have to stop in ADD for more than 24 hours to get a visa. I am wondering whether I can do this as an open jaw return and get a free stopover in ADD on the way to JIB, or whether I have to do two one ways (MEL-ADD and ASM-MEL) and pay my own way between ADD-JIB. Revenue flights in the Horn of Africa seem to be very expensive :(

This is fine to do as a return star alliance award with ADD as your free stopover.

Thanks Madrooster. One more question, if I may - is there a limit to the number of sectors/flights on a *A return ticket? I had a vague notion that it was six, but I can't see it written down anywhere...

Yes it's 6. 3 in each direction.

Hi @madrooster Tlv(Tk)-Ist(Sq)-Sin(Sq)-Syd is 88k KF miles + taxes in J oneway with no stopovers. Can i pay USD100 to do a stopver at Ist and still pay 88K KF miles? thanks

As per the Ts and Cs:
  • Complimentary stopovers are not permitted for one-way awards.
But how about if I pay USD100?
Additional conditions for Star Alliance Awards
  1. An itinerary may contain flights operated by a Star Alliance member airline (excluding Singapore Airlines), or flights operated by two or more Star Alliance member airlines (including Singapore Airlines). A maximum of six travel segments are allowed per itinerary.
  2. Travel is subject to blackout dates, capacity control and schedule changes by the operating Star Alliance member airline.
  3. All reservations must be confirmed before ticketing. Waitlisting is not permitted except on Singapore Airlines operated segments only.
  4. If your itinerary includes bookings in different classes of service, the award level corresponding to the highest class will apply for the whole award ticket.
  5. A one-way award requires half the number of KrisFlyer miles required for a round-trip award, and is only applicable to the list of airlines as specified in the Star Alliance chart here, provided there is no stopover included in the one-way award itinerary.
  6. One complimentary en route stopover is permitted for round-trip awards, unless otherwise stated below. Up to three additional stopovers are also permitted at USD100 each, regardless of the class of service.
  7. Complimentary stopovers are not permitted in a purely domestic itinerary, or within the country of departure in an international itinerary.
  8. Complimentary stopovers are not permitted if an itinerary contains only European cities, or is between the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico or U.S. Virgin Islands.
  9. Complimentary stopovers are not permitted for one-way awards.

See point 5 that you quoted:

  1. A one-way award requires half the number of KrisFlyer miles required for a round-trip award, and is only applicable to the list of airlines as specified in the Star Alliance chart here, provided there is no stopover included in the one-way award itinerary.

Yeah thanks.... saw that but was hoping that you could pay $100 to have a stopover at Ist :(

A few more questions, if I may...

1. Can you pay to build in a stopover on a mixed SQ/*A Saver Award if you pay fee? Pretty sure this is a no.

2. Can you book connecting flights on a *A Saver Award and then swap them if a direct flight becomes available? - specifically looking at DXB-CAI-ADD on MS and swapping it for DXB-ADD on ET when it is released.

3. Can you book a one way *A Saver Award now and add on the return journey when the flights become available (in order to make a stopover possible?

4. Can you book a return *A Saver Award now and move the return dates by a few weeks when they become available (and before the first flight has been taken)?
