One Day, That Economy Ticket May Buy You a Place to Stand
By CHRISTOPHER ELLIOTT
The airlines have come up with a new answer to an old question: How many passengers can be squeezed into economy class?

A lot more, it turns out, especially if an idea still in the early stage should catch on: standing-room-only "seats."

Airbus has been quietly pitching the standing-room-only option to Asian carriers, though none have agreed to it yet. Passengers in the standing section would be propped against a padded backboard, held in place with a harness, according to experts who have seen a proposal.

No more arugments to recline or not to recline

stackem and rackem

I've always thought about a full sleeper aircraft configuration (for long haul) - layout similar to ship or submarine bunks. They could have 2 or 3 persons vertically (area for doubles - new style of mile high club!).

Another area could do an eating area so you can sit up for meal rotations.

Hmmm. No recliners. :)

Boeing is under similar pressure to squeeze more seats onto its newest aircraft, the midsize Boeing 787. Some airlines are planning to space the seats just 30 inches apart from front to back, or about one inch less than the current average.
Great news. More people will line up for an economy seat.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

JohnK,

You must be euphoric at the thought :!:

 8) :D :p
Yes. Almost as good as Yada Yada's solution of bolting seats in economy so that they don't recline!

JohnK will be happy at a quote from the article.

Quote from the article:
"...Indeed, it is possible to have it both ways: more comfortable seats that are also more compact. For example, the latest economy-class seat from B/E Aerospace, called the ICON, allows the seat bottom to move forward when the seat is reclined, so that it does not steal legroom from the passenger behind it. It also incorporates better ergonomic designs now typically found in the business-class cabin..."

flyer4703,

You might like to try the URL syntax for this web site that is quite long:

... a Place to Stand
I think he did but somehow the syntax was wrong! If you notice at end of his post there is a "[/url]" left over.

When I saw the subject "standing room only" I thought the post would have been about the Brisbane/Sydney/Melbourne QCs at 6pm on a weekday!

I'm sure this upright stance will catch on quickly when they announce the J class. This is where your backboard "reclines" so that your knees are bent.

They forgot to add that pax are not strapped into their backboards on the aircraft - they are strapped in airside, stacked in rows, palleted and loaded by a forklift.

Just wait ...

Isn't that called Virgin Blue, but with more leg room.

Just getting in a few minutes when I'm able. It's a couple of days since I managed to look at the forums.

It's 8.9 deg outside (Dew point 8.3 deg) with 96% humidity so should be really foggy in the morning.
