SRS BSNS: DJ to get a domestic J cabin

Getting a good J product in a 737 will be interesting, I would imagine the 777s on the transcon sectors will make life interesting, with DJ having PE and J options, cue QF introducing 747's with PE back in the route.

The 777's on the trans-con's would be awesome, unless the QF group fight back with StarClass

Air Kiwi had a nice J in their A320's across the trench, something resembling that could suffice.
Agree it would be great to have 777's and 747's on the transcon with Y+ save having to fork out on J prices.

Cheers Dee

Mmm I know I said DJ need to top QF but do we think we really need lie flats on trans con?

Not convinced... Might just be seen as OTT...?? And the new QF J product on the A330s is pretty good and matches the requirements of the route pretty well. Interested to hear what others think....

I think he will have a multi-pronged approach, and would love to see their Y product improved. I'm sure he will do something - after all, one thing he is good at is extracting the premium prices from flyers, which is something QF benefits from to this day.

Well they have an insight into QF's plans with all their new 73H's flowing into the fleet over the next few years will be fully AVOD enabled in all classes with power etc etc. So that's the benchmark!! Hopefully we see the end of live to air.

My fear is that people will just see it as 'yay competition, that will get QF prices down' and then continue to fly QF. Such people don't deserve competition.

Well then I guess I do not deserve competition then.

Speaking personally though. This is just 1 of the 3 things that would have to happen for me to swing my business to DJ.

1. J seats PER-BNE/SYD/MEL
2. Member of *A or Skyteam (my personal preference is *A)
3. Status match my WP.

They do all those and the choice to stay with QF will be a whole lot harder.

Voiced or not, I am sure there are lots of people just like me on that one.

DJ do have a RFP out for a new aircraft type and there is talk of a 767-400 being the best fit, will be interesting.

Sorry. I'm going to give this the thumbs down.

A business class section on a 737 is the wrong direction for Virgin Blue to head. Sure PE is very rarely full, but the last time I flew PER-SYD on a A330 it was mostly transiting qantas staff filling up the business class seats. Then I assume of that remaining, there were a few points upgrades and status upgrades and a small percentage of actual paying passengers paying the full qantas.com price (I hear the big mining companies get a fair discount on flights).

I'm worried that a better J product than Qantas will just take up too much room.

Focus instead should be on the Air NZ hook up, strengthening VAustralia, improving their economy class to exceed that on the new qantas A330 which was very impressive, looking at alliance options and improving velocity.

I do however, disagree with AirNZ getting rid of their business classes on the A320. I see value in this as the short haul business class could link into a longer international trip (LAX/SIN/etc).

I think the CBR people would disagree with you there and thats one market where they need to pickup biz. There needs to be a good mix of capacity and frequency to work!

OK so maybe the next question should be, what would pax like to have as part of DJ's J offering that will challenge QF?

Perhaps break it down into two parts - hard product (seat etc) and soft product (catering, blankets etc)?

Slightly off-topic but I'm reliably informed that, along with the introduction of J, DJ will also unveil new staff uniforms towards the end of the year. There is also some talk of potentially new livery as well.

AirNZ will retain standard J on 767's and J+ (Business Premiere) on 777's which link with onward flights to LAX etc

While the introduction of J class may be the attention grabbing bit, if they are really going after the corporate market, then they are going to have to look at the product offering in 'Y' as well - after all that is where most business travel happens.

An interesting question may be about the motives for Qantas introducing its new domestic economy class offering.

A simple replication of VX's J product domestically in the US would suit the DJ market... I don't know if you could call it superior to QF, but certainly offers a well placed alternative :D

VX's First class appears quite successful because its not expensive. Upgrades are cheap. I upgraded the return leg of SEA-SFO for $70, which isn't bad ontop of a $39 fare.

Flew DJ on Monday MEL/SYD 6am service, Y was full, not a single person in Y+ all seats empty.

on just about all my DJ flights this year this has been the case.

Is it safe to say that DJ's Y+ is a dodo bird?

The Y+ is overpriced for a basically seperated Y configuration, plus basic food; may as well be in the Y blue space for a quarter the price.............
