SQ Tips, Trips and Tales

After recently catching my first trips in a380 F and a350 J

I can say that I noticed a noticeable difference in service, which i didn't think was possible!:)

In F they treat you like a king, in J , like a prince.

In F, its almost like they are trying to worship the ground you walk, while J is high quality service.

In J i was surprised when i got off, they thanked me by my name

I noticed things in J such as entrees being brought to you in trolleys, whilst F its like a restaurant

I could get used to this!
Thanks for sharing your experience :)

Is United website the way to go? Anyone done SIN-HNL before?

I think UA's tool is a good place to start yuor search. Easy to view, one month at a time calendar. Just keep an eye out for saver awards which you'll need. However, UA's routing rules are fairly generous... it may be the case that something offered by UA is not permitted by SQ (backtracking for example). And of course UA won't show long haul SQ.

A couple of years ago I tried to undertake a MEL-SIN-NRT-HNL redemption, flying ANA or UA for NRT-HNL (we wanted to do Japan and then Hawaii). ANA never became available in all my searches, and UA was always via GUM. Definitely wasn't suitable for us.

I ended up redeeming for JL J NRT-HNL (actually NRT-KIX-HNL for a cheeky 12hrs in Osaka to ensure we got our Takoyaki fill before leaving), which was an option. Plenty of JL planes heading from Japan to Hawaii daily - evening flights, arriving AM in Hawaii from various ports - Tokyo, Nagoya, Osaka all come to mind. You might have more success with JL if you're really keen. It became academic as our plans changed last minute, and when we rebooked, we actually found availability with Hawaiian Airlines SYD-HNL using Virgin points. Use AA.com to find availability on HA - then call Virgin to book.

Lastly, any reason Hawaii? Whilst we enjoyed our time on the big island, I'd not venture to Oahu again, and we found the whole trip very expensive for what it was. We're headed to Okinawa & Ishigaki in southern Japan to get some beach on the back of a mainland Japan trip in a few months time - have you considered this as a closer, easier option? We dont go until October this year - happy to report back if it helps :)

@travelnutjohn , you must be on the aircraft by now.
If you do get a chance, please share some pictures and/or a summary of your experiences RE: check-in, SKL F lounge, boarding etc. A lot of us here would love to share in the experience :)
all done :) I did my best

so probably more aimed at the seasoned flyers,
seems that many prefer day time flights over night flights, after my recent trip, I feel the same, and got me thinking, seems a huge waste of opportunity to be sleeping for most of hte trip ,including missing out on certain aspects of meal,

however, if you do fly the say 12pm flight for 8 hours, do you guys actually sleep?
that would be an opporunity missed as well if you didnt actually sleep, and didnt use the comfy bed etc
I dont think I would ever sleep on a 12-8pm flight unless I was jetlagged

I prefer night J flights personally:
  1. Maximise the holiday and minimise the debit to annual leave.
  2. With a late night departing flight, you can enjoy the whole day in your destination (aka. see, eat & drink all the good things available). With a day flight, I find I have a cough nights sleep the night before, wake up at stupid o'clock in the AM and then feel worse - fighting staying awake on a day flight to avoid being wide awake when we land and should be getting ready for bed.
  3. I'm a cheapskate - why pay for a hotel to depart early AM when I can sleep on the plane and dodge another night? Flying J allows me to shower in the lounge easily before boarding so I'm fresh.
  4. Food is always better on the ground. Even the best in flight can't compare to options available on the ground.
  5. Mrs tizey hates flying full stop. The most direct path is the one of least resistance. Even flying MEL-NRT and TPE-MEL in the coming months, I couldnt pursuade her to go MEL-SIN-NRT or TPE-SIN-MEL to go F.
That said, if I was to be redeeming F to Europe, I'd aim for a day flight so I can enjoy all aspects of it. But see point 3 above, and I'm perfectly OK with J.

I recently flew SYD-SIN-LHR A380 in PE, new fitout. Had bulkhead row 31 - fantastic seat, no need to climb over if window. The seat is significantly in front of the centre bulkhead so if there was an infant there, you are well away. The check-in agent in SYD placed me there at no additional charge, which was lovely. Ok that's the good bit. But the food: very underwhelming even when book the cook as I did. This is not a business class meal served to PE similar to what VA do. SQ just repackage it in your standard airline tubs a la Y. I was relatively well looked after for beer and wine SYD-SIN but did not indulge on the second leg. I also missed the footrest.

That row 31 makes it worthwhile though. Just my thoughts.

I noticed my singapore teddy bears, just then, green one is a girl with skirt, and blue is a boy with A350 written on it

is there a a380 version? and how many variations are there?

Colours vary occasionally - doesn't the BLUE one say 787 Dream Liner and GREEN one A350? Or is it other way around?

Oh wow I did not even think about JAL. I was purely just thinking SQ points and how can I use it as my preference on flying is with SQ so I was thinking of the ways to get to HNL with SQ miles, So my plan of MEL-SIN-NRT-HNL seemed great, but now it seems impossible.

Original plan was Hawaii only, as wifey want's to go HNL.

Good thing is most my points are still in Amex, so I guess we can move some to QF and book JAL? from Japan-HNL. However, I guess if we can find MEL-SYD-HNL flights on VA/HA, via AA.com, then that would be a lot easier and we can probably save Japan for a different, bigger and proper trip. I wish I had transferred some points to VA during the promotions. Guess I'll have to wait for the next one.

Never really considered Japan's beach as part of the trip for some sun and sand action. Just searched up Ishigaki and the place looks amazing like tropical island.

Thanks for the tips.

Personally I prefer to fly SIN-LHR (my usual route) overnight in J (SQ322 or 306) or if splashed out in F I fly during the day SQ 308. Perth is my origin. The way back always mid-morning from LHR so get back to Perth around lunchtime the next day, Better for jetlag IMO.

I sleep well overnight - as CE says red wine and a special tablet (Mogodon for me) works wonders :)

I would take one window for your son, and the two middle seats for you + wife so you can be together(ish), and keep an eye on son.

Alternatively, if you don't feel the need to be together with your wife you could take two windows and one middle. So like 14A, 15A and 15D for example. You and wife can swap between the middle and window depending on your wishes during the different parts of the flight.

Thanks Mel_Traveller,
One more question, My wife first name is Toni-Ann as in her PP, and when I booked the flight I wrote it as
Toni-Ann ( I think) and on the booking it has come out as ToniAnn will this be a problem??

Thanks
Clive

Struggling to use your Frequent Flyer Points?

Frequent Flyer Concierge takes the hard work out of finding award availability and redeeming your frequent flyer or credit card points for flights.

Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, the Frequent Flyer Concierge team at Frequent Flyer Concierge will help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

im sure this problem will come up more in the future, but due to amex devaluation , many convereted their points to the best program which consensus is KRIS

I have also done that, now I face the good problem of not being able to use my points before expiry,

ill give some away to family, ill try and do F in every trip, and ill squeeze in as much travel as poissible ,

what would you guys do? options?

If you transffered at the start of the year then you would have essentially up to 3-5 years expiry wouldn't you? Forgot how it exactly works, as I'm sure one of the SQ gurus can clarify the exact method.
IIRC you can essentially book flight 355 days in advance (3 years + 355 days) then change dates later on (3 years + 355 days + 355 days), which I guess brings it close to a 5 year expiry.

Or extend your points expiry buy paying with points? then use the above methods to make it 5+ years.

If you have heaps of points to burn and want to go Europe, try and book the new suites (Advantage fare only) if you haven't tried yet as that'll burn through some points.

On another note, I'm looking at SIN-MEL for 2020 and Sq217 only has a380 for Jan then the rest of the year until the last viewable date is 777. Any news on a change back to a380?
