SQ Tips, Trips and Tales

Only the KA A320s (and to a lesser extent the A321s) are an issue. The KA 330s are perfectly fine - the same regional business class as CX with plenty of space, good recline, and depart from the main concourse at HKG. The only difference is that some CX flights may operate with international business class.

Some people want to be able to hit the ground running on arrival. The bed on a plane is there for that reason, to arrive refreshed if you want.

A lot of the narrow body KA fleet now has the CX regional J seat. Had the old seat on a recent HKG-HAN but the new one on PNH-HKG

mrsmart make sure you are on CX HKG-PVG and not KA - KA dogs of planes.

And totally disregard what Captain Snooze (aka MEL) says about sector length - 7hrs MEL-SIN - jeez how long you want to sleep for? One day you will sleep forever why you need it now? Just don't take 773 o/n flt - regional seats no good for sleeping - Diamond seats on 77W/77WN perfect.

And I would never worry about no amenity kit - real men don't worry about lip balm and eye shadow or whatever there is in those things.

What date you flying? I will be heading to PVG on 1st or 2nd Feb.

Made sure to get the CX A330. Seemed like the only F available on the route is KA. An investigation discovered KA F uses the same seat as CX J. Crazy.

Have done a number of trips back and forth between MEL-SIN in SQ J, so pretty comfortable with it. Love the Diamond seats (poor man's F). No amenity kit needed... I'm too particular about what I like (real men etc. etc.) and pack my own PJs for overnighters that fit well and I know won't get too hot.

Will be good to compare though. When sitting in the KF Gold lounge, I sometimes have the 'grass is greener' thought and imagine my life hanging out at The Pier eating noodles all day under a cosy Studioilse glow.

First time to mainland China though! Would be great to meet you Cruiser if we crossed paths at all. Will be flying back PVG-SIN-MEL on Feb 1, arriving into SIN on SQ825 @ 06:30.

825 is 380 so you should get 5hrs sleep - you will use the CA J lounge - quite good by Chinese standards - I would not eat at all on board - you should get best part 5hrs sleep - on the MEL scale that should see you 'hit the ground dawdling' in SIN.

Good lord MEL - you could have trotted out a better cliche than that old chestnut couldn't you? But tell me MEL - what time does your preferred CX combo arrive into PVG? And your assumption that everybody needs same amount of sleep as you do may be slightly flawed - eg. I never get / need more than 4 or 5hrs sleep here in Oz - I'll bet you a few others here are similar.

Finally what sort of commission do CX have you on that sees you trawling the SQ threads trying to convert SQers over to the dark side? :D

My preferred carrier to PVG is Air China, and to HKG is CX.

If you are going to recommend eating before you fly and skip all the offerings on board, a longer flight time where you can arrive at the airport later, eat on the plane, relax with a drink and still get your 4-5 (whatever) hours seems to make sense.

I respect your opinion that a 7 hour flight time is sufficient (for you). Scientific research recommends sleep in the region of 7-9 hours (although recent studies suggest around 7 may be optimal). I guess it depends what you have planned for arrival. If you are going out or going sightseeing, I prefer to arrive fully refreshed than slightly groggy.

Warming to book some more Suites rides once we get back to PER. Had not realized that there was a dark side CE.
By the way CE I went to a sleep doctor and now I do get more than 4 hours of sleep a night.

Here in TPR

The question of 'Stopovers' on one way rdpts was raised in Suite Savers thread however I think discussion best continued here as this topic not Suite specific and none of us want to rile those grumpy Administrators by going OT do we?

I just spoke to KF call ctr re this matter - my findings here:

Saver Redemptions: It has never been and is still not possible to book a 'Stopover' on a one way 'Saver' redemption online - you have always had to call and still do have to call. When now booking Saver's online a 'Stopover' window may / will appear post flight selection but if you try to add a stopover it will foul booking process - if you want a 'Stopover' on a one way Saver redemption you must call KF call ctr and cost is USD100.

Standard Redemptions: whereas previously you had to call to add a 'Stopover' to a Std rdpt you can now do that during the online booking process - again the 'Stopover' window will pop up after initial flits selected and you can then input your desired dep date from SIN - if seat/s available on your desired dep date then booking can proceed online - again cost to add stopover is USD100/pax.

Full Redemption: Same as Standard.

Return redemption bookings are eligible for a FREE stopover on one sector. Additional stopovers can be added to any booking at rate of USD100/stopover.

I think that is the nuts and bolts - if I find any more info will add as I become aware.

Thanks for clarifying Cruiser.

OT from the OT thread: Didn't know it is 100 USD. That's a shame considering the exchange rates... but makes sense since the $30 change fee is also in USD. I wonder why they don't charge in SGD.

AC179 Dep MEL 11:35 / Arr PVG 19:35 - You want to hit the ground running MEL? Where do you run to if arr PVG 19:35? Your hotel to check in? You are seriously not going to try to tell us you run to a meeting with Chinese at 21:00 or so which is time you would get to downtown SH after clearing immig / collecting luggage / transfer etc.

So you sleep at home night before - another 4 to 7hrs sleep during day on flt to PVG - then sleep that nt in SH hotel - I thought it was a joke when I started calling you Capt'n Snooze - maybe not so far from the truth hey my friend? :D :D :D

FWIW: I am having difficulty getting F/J Saver rdpt on SQ confirmed MEL-SIN-PVG for Feb 1 or 2 - my contact on long leave and all classes heavily sold already - little chance of rdpts clearing - so close to booking AC J MEL-PVG - $2,019 right now looks excellent value.

I'm trying to book a saver business class ticket from Adelaide to Copenhagen in August.

There is no Saver availability on the day I want for the entire itinerary (which would cost 68,000KF points after online discount). Standard is available at 127,500.

When I look at availability for each sector by itself, however, both legs are available at the saver rate (46750 +51000 = 97750)

I have waitlisted the saver trip for the whole itinerary...but It hasn't cleared in a month...and I need to lock something in. I'm probably going to book each leg separately as a saver fare...but it is very frustrating that I need to pay an extra ~30000 miles + additional taxes I suspect.

The call centre say that it relates to capacity limits for redemption tickets???

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

many thanks in advance! :)

Has anyone had any experience with "Fly Ahead" on a business reward with SQ with no status?

i have waitlisted an earlier flight with the confirmed flight later that day and turned up with sufficient time to get on the WL flight with checked-in luggage.

was an F saver though. and i had the WL. not sure if that makes any diff.

Check this post/thread out. Same concept, just in suites.

I'm having the same problem too. Just waiting for points to arrive in my KF account before I make the call to see if they can "connect 2 separate sectors".

I know others have reported issues with the second set of Changi dollar vouchers on the return leg even if booked as 2 seperate onways but just picked up my second set so it's obviously operator dependant. It never hurts to try

What was the rule that didn't allow this? Can't see it anywhere on their info page or am I blind.

CDVs can only be claimed once, on either leg of the passenger's itinerary.
- E.g. A passenger who has separate e-tickets issued for his itinerary “Sydney – Singapore – Beijing vv”, he can claim his CDVs either upon his arrival in Singapore from Sydney OR upon his arrival in Singapore back from Beijing.

When is this promotion expiring? I'm flying SYD to DEL via SIN on 30/4 and returning on 21/5
