SQ Tips, Trips and Tales

Excuse me if ive got this wrong, but is the qantas RTW product has a thread of about 200 pages long on this forum

but the SQ equalivant rtw on star alliance requires 420k, vs 350k kris flyer points of F , and i assume with far less taxes

and yet there is no huge thread on it, or much mention,

am i missing the thread or isnt the star alliance RTW produc so much more superior in terms of points required and fees associated with the same routes???

The whole forum has a big bias towards Qantas being Australian based. Qantas point for point is pretty cough compared to most other points. It is pretty easy to get them though.

I was tasked with getting my youngest son home from the US by Christmas Eve. A call to Kris Flyer and the
waitlisted Flight was fixed. My son can cook so we needed him back on the earliest flight. Thank you Kris Flyer for helping.
The fact is Kris Miles are worth much more than Qantas points.

Hi,

I've just booked a J redemption NRT-SIN-SYD for March 1. I waitlisted for upgrade to F/Suites on A380 for SIN-SYD leg (SQ231) and it cleared within 10 minutes which was a pleasant surprise. I'm waiting for my Dragon points to arrive as I've exhausted all my SQ (& VA which were handy for instant transfer but for the accompanying haircut) points.

Apologies if this has been asked and answered before. How can we tell whether we have old or new Suites? I'm happy either way but would be great to give the new suites a try especially since I'm travelling solo for this trip?

Look at the seating plan as New Suites has less total suites (seats).

Note too with SQ when booking that you can select seats before paying. So if you do not like the available seats or cabin type you can opt out then.

Sorry to half hijack your post. But you got wait list approved in 10mins. Is that normal?

I've got a booking that's wait listed for about 6 weeks. Now for jun 2019

Yes. Waitlists can be as long as it takes for SQ to clear them. Usually though you should hear something by a couple weeks before departure if you don’t hear earlier. A waitlist is exactly that, waiting for a seat to become free... which could either be a cancellation by another passenger (and the seat goes back in to award inventory), or it could be SQ reviewing the flight and deciding to release more award seats.

You can call SQ and ask them to check the status, they may send a message to follow up the waitlist (gets someone to review the flight earlier than they might have been planning to). But there’s no guarantee the request will yield results. All depends on how many seats SQ thinks they’re gonna sell.

Willl/can/are they able to give you an indication of backlog?

Last waitlist I did was CX a year ahead of schedule and didn’t clear so my expectations re waitlist for all airlines (big assumption) were set. Pleasant surprise to have F clear so quickky.

I’m flying out in CX to burn those points so they don’t expire. Booked SQ on way back as everything on CX was waitlisted for about a week. Was pleasantly surprised to find availability in SQ.

Really wanted to fly the day before but the time I wanted was waitlisted. Wondering whether I should’ve waitlisted that itinerary before locking in my chosen flights.

You can put in a request. Whether they're going to give you that sort of information may depend on the agent. But in reality award seats aren't desinged to take away from commercial bookings. If prospective first and business class passengers had ready access to this type of information they'd be less likely to actually pay (and use awards instead).

If the waitlist is 'open' it's a good start - at least you're on the list and SQ thinks there might be a chance it will clear. Waitlists are not always offered and where they are offered, can be closed at a certain point (where SQ thinks there will definitiely be fewer seats than demand).

In my very limited experience, I just assumed that no wait list means fully booked out with cash payers or a huge waiting list alrrayd exists.

So looks like I assumed right

I also. Look at other flights that day and if all other flights have wait list open, then that I assume is a higher chance of getting one

Lucky you, albyd!!
Pretty sure you're on the "old" suites but I'd give my eye tooth for another trip at the very front; old or new.
Realistically; the only difference is layout and space if you think about it
Both offer an incredible seat, an independent "full-mattress" bed and exquisite service/food/wine. It's just the pursuit of newness that drives everyone (me included) on this forum

New Suites has 6 seats (2 rows of 3) - old Suites has 12.

Edit thanks to potm

Love the fact that SE Asia redemptions cost the same as just to SIN.

SQ218 connecting to MI772 to get to Koh Samui very quickly with minimal stopover make for coughtail in hand on a beach ASAP of finishing work on the friday evening .

Yeah I did a similar redemption to SZX in J for Nov.. Grand total of 106k return!

Flying Silk J too, from Changi.

The Suites seat maps have been updated with a change in colour from red to gold. J seat maps seem to still be blue so probably now been matched to the boarding pass colour scheme.

Interestingly it now shows what seats can be converted to a double bed.

I assume this has been rolled out to the new A380 Suites and possibly J as well.
