SQ Tips, Trips and Tales

I entered the flight number and date into SeatGuru and it came up as Airbus A380-800 (388) Four Class V1 so I am assuming it's version 1?
Rows 82 and 83 are are the closest to the lavatories so it must be the one you were in, thanks for the heads up.

Rows 79 look pretty ok as they right before the exit, but can they recline fully?

Config can change right up to day before departure. Check incoming aircraft. We were in business class MEL-SIN with the mixed cabins upstairs. Config changed to full business class and they proactively called us to change seat allocations day before.

And therein lies the problem.
We would love to have an upper deck economy seat so spending $13 per seat isn't bad value.
But if they change the flight to the new A380 with the economy seats at the bottom main deck then it makes no sense to pre-book the seats.

Can I choose seats anytime after payment by going into my bookings?

I wouldn’t be too worried. I’ve never had an aircraft change on SQ. I agree it can happen, but it’s unlikely to be ‘on the day’ like it can be with say Thai Airways. There may be changes if they refurbish an aircraft, but this will happen with a bit of notice.

Normally SQ do seem to give plenty of notice. I had one award redemption booked almost a year out that must have changed aircraft at least 5 or 6 times.

However once there was only on the day notice given. FCO to SIN. We arrived at check-in and the counter rep was apologising profusely to all J pax checking and told us we would get 10,000 points each for the inconvenience. The plane swapped in had the inferior sloping seat in J rather than true lie flat. I had to just the points that were offered though. I suspect it was meant to have only been offered to paying pax rather than to reward pax.

The last couple of years the metal change does not seem to happen as much. But for several years I was having virtually every flight have a metal change or two (I book 6-12 months out in the main).

Thanks for the reassurances mate.
Looks like it will be a toss up between SQ or QF with QF winning slightly on price and having a couple of lounge passes but SQ winning out on the flight timings.

Yes same thing happened to me on the same route in 2014, and as a paying passenger, but no points offered even after lodging a subsequent complaint. Guess I didn't try hard enough.

So we need to fly back to Singapore some time in May next year to attend a wedding and I was planning to take Qantas initially coz that is where our FF lies with but saw SQ having some pretty competitive prices for the same dates.

Will be flying in economy from Melbourne on the A380 and was hoping to get some insights as to what are the best economy seats on the upper deck or are there any seats that we should avoid?

Are the upper deck seats comparable to those of the Qantas A380?

Thanks!

I recently flew on SQ218 which was an A380, seated in the upper deck recently in Economy. I sat in 72A. I was able to place my laptop satchel in a compartment next to me which I found convenient. However i like to rest my head on the window and I found that the compartment makes it harder for me to rest my head. I used the lavatories towards the end of my flight and had no queue whatsoever. I also noticed a couple of people utilising the middle seats to make themselves a "lie-flat" bed on my particular flight.

In terms of boarding, I saw seperate queues for those on the upper deck vs lower deck. However I'm a VA gold so from the lounge to gate 9 in MEL we boarded ahead of basically everyone else.

Happy to answer any other questions you may have.

I too am flying in May next year and like you am hoping to once again score seats in the upper deck.

Thank you very much for your wonderful insights, they are very helpful indeed :)

Not many better sights to see than a confirmed Suites seat

And of course 3D selected for added efficiency when obtaining refills of Krug (my wife is odd and prefers the Dom so gets the C seat)

I selected 3C for me and 3D for non drinking Mrs Steady - should I be swapping?

That all depends if you are right or left handed.

I am right handed and prefer to drink with my right meaning the glass will be on the aisle side allowing the Krug bearing Singapore Girl ease of access.

If one is to plan a proper assault on the SQ stocks these matters must be considered ;)

SQ J flight from SYD then onwards via MI J flight, all booked via SQ award and SQ site. I should get access to silverkris lounge I believe

Bwahaha love that thought process!

o_O The drink tables are in the centre for both 3C and D, or am I missing something all this time?

You are missing how it is poured ;)

I will admit that I have only been in Suites once before but they never poured across the front of me in the Suite.

It was always like this.
