I believe that competition results in better service. Look at what has happened with QF as far as in-flight catering goes, it has improved since Vermin came onto the scene, as they needed something to differentiate themselves.

When (note, not IF) SQ start operating SYD-LAX it will mean that QF will HAVE to become more consistent with their in-flight offerings. No more of this "really really good one day" and "absolutly appalling the next" sort of thing we currently see. And that can only be good for QF passengers. (Such as myself who flies this route in steerage).

I think thadocta has hit it on the head.

Without "serious" competition, an airline can afford to be complacent. When you have competition, you can't afford to be like that. It will force QANTAS management to focus on keeping their employees and customers engaged, potentially at the expense of profit.

I've always believed that if you look after your customers, and look after your employees, they will look after you.

Should that be "potentially at the expense of their short term profit"? In the longer term they need to be profitable, but do so they certainly have to engage both employees and customers.
