On looking at the signage, I interpreted that they were happy to accept AMEX but NOT for low value amounts (less than $10)

I have actively argued with places that have the Amex branding up then refuse to accept it at payment time. It's bait-and-switch, and it angers me.

Empty your wallet of all cash and other debit/credit cards and show them when you're paying with Amex... Take it or leave it?

I did that once with my dentist who I knew took Amex but always denied it. The poor receptionist had to call 'the boss' before she would take my card.

The main perpetrator of this is the CBA tablet machine that displays all the logos irrespective of whether the merchant accepts them or not.
I think it is configurable, I'm certain I've seen those tablet machines without the AmEx logo, but it just seems to display everything by default no matter if it's accepted or not. Which is infuriating for the end-user on top of the accessibility issues with those units.
