Hi,

Just wondering what people's opinion would be on splitting a stay in between two hotels?

I am going to Cabo on honeymoon for about 6 days (and then onto new york and the states)

I was thinking about splitting our stay 3 nights at a moderately priced hotel (yet still rated highly) and then the last 3 nights and splurging a little at a much pricier hotel

Would the changing hotels ruin the being able to unwind/vibe over six days?

Also in playing around with hotel dates, the much pricier hotel actually offers a fourth night free and could work out better budget wise but only on the first four nights. This would mean only 2 days at the other hotel at the end?

The price jumps massively if I try to stay the 6 nights. (I add the two days and then the price every night increases by $150/night )

So just wondering if anyone has ever done the hotel swap?

I have done hotel swaps (mattress runs) many times, most recently last weekend.
However, if it was my honeymoon I would want to stay put at the 5 star joint, unpack, relax and enjoy my time there :D.
If you are continuing onto the States for the remainder of the holiday, I imagine you will be staying at a few more hotels.
How much is the pricier hotel if you split it over 4 nights + 2 nights or 2 nights + 4 nights?

yeah I want to stay at the 5 star all the time too, we still have another 2 weeks through the states ahead of us, so budget is being stretched (still tempted to blow the budget but weighing up options and trying to be a bit sensible about it) :-|

The pricier one has a fourth night free deal either way I do it

4 nights first = $1700 Then another $500 to stay at a different hotel that has all inclusive last 2 nights
4 nights tail end= $2100 then another $500 for the all inclusive the first 2 nights

6 nights at the 5 star shows $3500, I can trick it sort of and make 2 separate bookings of 4 + 2 at the same place and get it to $3100

Why the compulsion to stay at a 5 star where you know you will have to pay a premium? I know it's your honeymoon and you want it to be special but hey, I want to buy a Bentley Continental too but I don't because I can't justify the cost. You already know you are stretching your budget so get on to tripadvisor to check out all the hotels, read the hotel reviews and stay the full 6 days at a 4 star hotel that will be nearly as good for much less money.

I wouldn't contemplate an all inclusive deal either - often the booze with those deals is cheap quality and do you really want to eat at the same place every day on your honeymoon?

Tripadvisor has made me change my mind plenty times over the last couple of weeks :D

It can make you question your choices one review at a time, but you are right, it is really handy.

The compulsion, I guess, is that if I can balance it, split the stays and for not that much more, why not try something top shelf?

I do it quite often. Allthough I do it for a different reason. At the start of August I am coming to Sydney for the Boat show. Staying Friday night at Holiday Inn at the Rocks and recieve 3000 extra bonus points, 2nd night at the Holiday Inn at Potts point, get the 3000 extra points and then back to the rocks for the Sunday night for another extra 3000 points. None of the stays are at the same hotel on consecutive nights. Cost.. 5 mins walk to/from Martin place train station and a couple of dollars for the train. Reward....9000 extra PC points on top of my regular 1.5 points per dollar. Should clear a total of 20000 PC points for 3 nights. Thats a free night at a HI someplace.

Yes, you won't get a much better chance to indulge yourself and your new bride than going "top shelf" - but I'm thinking that if you have to stay somewhere significantly cheaper for 2 of your 6 nights so you can average the cost a bit, then you are compromising the quality of 1/3 of your stay. I think there's a lot to be said for not doing that on your honeymoon. Better not to split the stay I reckon. It all comes down to personal preferrence (which is a matter for you and your +1) but you did ask for opinions/suggestions.................

have you booked all your flights?

Yes, except the flight out of cabo, waiting for virgin america flight to have a deal, flying to san francisco after that

Yep, definitely appreciate the opinions and will do some more reading up as I see where you are coming from

We have changed hotels before - if they are nice and close (ie easy walk with luggage) that is less disruptive.
A cheaper or lower class hotel isn't always lesser.
We have stayed in hotels that were 1 star that we enjoyed much more than some 4/5 star.
I'd just have a look at what you are wanting from your stay and narrow down the hotels based on meeting that criteria if both the cheaper hotel and the more expensive are offering the same thing I'd stay 4 in cheap at the start 2 in the expensive at the end... if the USA trip isn't filled with luxury to match the expensive hotel in Cabo then I'd just stay in the cheaper one all 6 nights and put the extra money towards being pampered rather than the hotel room itself.
It's always hard choosing a hotel honeymoon or not, but if overspending is going to put a damper on the whole thing - I wouldn't, because there is nothing worse than trying to relax but not being able too because you can't afford anything and having that constantly on your mind.
