That’s what I was thinking, imagine how much cooler belly-tapping the MCG would be with A380’s, instead of A220’s or E190’s or whatever they used in ZA?!

While the MCG can hold ~100.000 people, the prior allocation of seats means seats allocated for the 2 team members in the final are in the 100's. Not 10 of thousands. Are 1000's of people who only go to the final and who do not go to games in the season nor are paid up member of a team.

Yes. Club members had the chance to apply a fortnight ago (when there were still I think 6 clubs in it) for seats costing anywhere from $150-550 (and you don't get to set a max)

My physio who is a Dockers fan booked flights in March for the GF. She planned to just cancel them if the Dockers didnt make it. Smart lady!

MrsDaver6 is heading to Melbourne this week for work. Just looked at return flights now on Thursday. Well over a dozen QF flights at reasonable prices. Great opportunity for MEL based folks to head west. I reckon those flights will be half empty at best.

The emptiest flight I've ever flown was a MEL-SYD flight on a Friday evening in September last year when the Swans were playing a final at the MCG the next day. The plane was needed in Sydney so it could transport a full load of Swans fans down for the game.

I discovered that 737s can take off at quite an angle when they're almost empty!

Going back two decades or more, Qantas would schedule B747 to operate domestically at times of such demand; backfill prices were often quite discounted.

We are flying in Wednesday from Adelaide and plan to use @Cruiser Elite recommended taxi service. Getting home we are going MEL-SYD-PER.
We booked early and have confirmed grand final seats.

Most MEL-PER on 27 SEP is now selling at $1800+, far above my Business Class fare of $1299.

No it's a huge headache. A380s can't park in domestic that means they have to goto international terminals, ABF orange stickers and all. With all the likelihood of a380 going tech its also an unreliable option.

Plus there's lots of additional options like via SYD or ADL. Airlines would rather ALL their flights full.

This also isn't all the airlines first rodeo doing this. They've been doing it for years.

Can’t they just upsize an A220 to A380 on demand?! It’s only a 73% increase in A’s!! I mean, I was just sent out for 2L of milk & it was on sale so I bought 4L of milk … and I’m not being paid anywhere near the money as those people who write the algorithms for QF ticket-pricing and availability management!!!

As part of my Essendon package I get access to 2 GF tickets every year. Not going this year so have them to a friend who has never been before. We used to go most years.

Ill give you a hint, the prices for flights around GF weekend has been high for ages and lots of tickets are sold on flex tickets months out in advance. I found that out the hard way booking flights for my partner a few years ago for PER - MEL in GF weekend when she was travelling back from Mauritius. I was looking about 4 months before the GF and ended up going via SYD as that was normal prices.

Is the idea of AFL GF fans wanting airlines to add adding a bigger aircraft to add more seats so prices are lower?

Why would an airline do that especially if doing so requires that aircraft to be taken out of the schedule it is on?.

Several Full aircraft on a normal schedule with higher per seat prices for several days on either side of the GF is better for an airline.

I suggest that airlines, who are forever trying to discover the next goldmine would have done their sums. The AFL Gf is nothing new.

As long as they have enough people willing to pay high prices for the limited seats, there's no incentive for them to make any changes.

Especially without any real competitors with lower fares, and no real alternatives like high speed rail.

We are basically hoping they increase their costs and lower their revenue per seat, but that would only make sense if demand greatly exceeded the current supply of seats.
