Sonder: gone as quickly as they came

Marriott have terminated their agreement with Sonder hotels and these are all now gone from the booking system:

Very sudden as we were looking at NYC hotels on Friday night and the Sonder properties were definitely there for booking then.

I stayed in a Sonder property in Rome with my family, before the Marriott partnership. The location was great and the apartment was cool, but there were some glaring defects and I had to fight them (and Booking dot com) for months to be made whole. It was a complete clusterlovemaking.
All this to say I am not surprised that Marriott pulled the pin.

Sonder have been in financial trouble for a while, negotiating with lenders to try and avoid bankruptcy.

They delayed their AGM at the last minute last week and are currently without a CEO or CFO.

I was planning a month long stay in a Sonder apartment in NYC over Dec/Jan, glad that didn’t eventuate! Had a splendid stay at Sonder Malasaña last month in Madrid and sad that’s no longer going to be an option going forward !

Just thought I'd chime in here as I have/had a reservation with Marriott for one of their Sonder properties in Toronto for a stay in early January. So far, the only communication I have received is from Sonder pointing out that my reservation won't be honoured and to get in touch with Marriott:



I called Marriott soon after receiving that email to see what my options are and was told all they could do was issue a refund which I should expect to land on my credit card within the next 30 days. I inquired about the Ultimate Reservation Guarantee (which in theory should offer 90,000 points + $200 USD in compensation for the hassle). I also inquired about the possibility of them simply rebooking me into a different Marriott property (i.e. Residence Inn Toronto which was in a similar style to the Sonder apartment hotel booked) but was told more or less to pound sand. I did inquire if things could change in the coming days and was told that this was a possibility so will try my luck later. For the time being I made a fully refundable booking at a nearby Doubletree should Marriott simply wipe their hands of all responsibility as I suspect may be a strong possibility despite it being a Marriott property.
