Sonder: gone as quickly as they came

Marriott have terminated their agreement with Sonder hotels and these are all now gone from the booking system:

Very sudden as we were looking at NYC hotels on Friday night and the Sonder properties were definitely there for booking then.

I stayed in a Sonder property in Rome with my family, before the Marriott partnership. The location was great and the apartment was cool, but there were some glaring defects and I had to fight them (and Booking dot com) for months to be made whole. It was a complete clusterlovemaking.
All this to say I am not surprised that Marriott pulled the pin.

Sonder have been in financial trouble for a while, negotiating with lenders to try and avoid bankruptcy.

They delayed their AGM at the last minute last week and are currently without a CEO or CFO.

More info at OMAAT Marriott Abruptly ends Sonder Partnership - v interesting comments of people mid-stay being told they must vacate Sonder property by tomorrow despite having pre paid stay in full. I was planning a month long stay in a Sonder apartment in NYC over Dec/Jan, glad that didn’t eventuate! Had a splendid stay at Sonder Malasaña last month in Madrid and sad that’s no longer going to be an option going forward !
