I'll be off in a few days to Europe (I hope) for two Ponant cruises - first, around the Canary Islands for a week, then around Sicily in about 8 days. At the end, spending a few days in Milan and seeing The Last Supper fresco, amongst other things. I was thinking about not starting this TR until I was under way, but here goes.

Although these cruises are 2 days apart, and on different vessels, I was able to get a 5% 'back to back' discount. There is a 200 euro Virtuoso on-board credit on each, also. Ponant gives me a further 150 euro credit on each, per my status level of 'Grand Admiral'

Why Canary Islands? I was planning a land/flights trip there last year but it fell through, then I saw this cruise and it seemed a better way than packing up every day, catching another plane or ferry. The Canaries are active volcanic islands, with the most recent eruption in 2021. There are excursions at every stop - busses to places of interest, then hiking or walking or viewing. This is my first Ponant cruise that isn't 'expedition'. As usual, its a small vessel - Le Bellot , 184 max guests and 118 crew - so I'll see how it goes. I'm expecting the pax to be dominated by the French, but I'm also expecting separate excursion groups for the 'rest' (Anglos +).

Sicily - its been missing from my places to visit for too long (as is most of Italy, frankly) so a cruise around it, tagged onto the Canaries cruise seemed like a good introduction. I was planning to follow the cruise with a driving trip around the island, but I couldn't afford the time in the end. Another time. This is on the Le Dumont d'Urville, same pax and crew compliment as the other. Both vessels are classified as 'Explorers'. This cruise, which begins and ends in Valletta, Malta, is a 'gastronomic' one, with three specialist chefs. Food isn't normally a big thing on my travels, but this may be a bonus to the history of Sicily and - more volcanos!! As with the Canary Islands, there are tours at each stop. Again, expect to be a majority of French pax. This will be my third visit to Malta, and not my last.

In Milan, seeing a number of treasures. Booked tickets so far for The Last Supper fresco at Cenacolo Vinciano (hard to get - had to dive in on exactly the right day a few months ago, while cruising the Indonesian archipelago), the magnificent Biblioteca Ambrosiana and the Cathedral. More as time permits. Recommendations?

Getting there:
VA paid J HBA-MEL-HBA. SQ J award flights Melbourne to Singapore and back, mainly via VA points. Then, originally was going to be J QR SIN-DOH-MAD there and MXP-DOH-SIN back, but we all know what's happened there. At the time of writing, the flights to substitute for QR not definite, but I have fully refundable tickets on Turkish, whose timings were almost exactly the same as the Qatar ones. QR's rebooking time periods have been changing over the past week, and my Travel Agent is still seeing if any might be suitable for me, now the return leg is now re-bookable. Besides the timing, I have particular 'requirements' (eg departure times) which limit my options. I'm keen to try Turkish long-haul (in which case QR will be refunded), but if I can get a good QR re-booking, it'll save me a couple of $K.

Within Europe, MAD-LPA (Las Palmas, on the Canaries) is on Iberia using BA Avios. LPA-LGW-MLA (Malta) on BA also using BA Avios and MLA-LIN (Milan) is on KM Malta airlines, using their points gathered in past visits to Malta. All these in business.

Hotels - a few non-Accor (at MAD and in Las Palmas), but otherwise with Accor.

Mr LL and I did the Ponant Canaries cruise in 2024 - it was excellent (and we're not Ponant fans) - guests were not mostly French (as would be expected) - quite. a mix of European nationalities (including UK) and Americans and one other Aussie couple.

Milan - I was a bit underwhelmed by the last supper. It was also very amusing watching people come in an immediately start photographing it and video and selfies without actually looking at it.

Duomo is well worth paying extra to walk around the top - there is a lift to the top and I think you have to walk down - I couldn't find my way back to the lift but that may be deliberate.

Public transport easy to navigate and I love the old trams

The BA lounge at LIN is OK but doesn't have toilets (or didn't last year) but you can easily catch the metro from the city out to the airport.

The railway station is pretty impressive and @TheRealTMA recommended Pecks for food - pretty spectacular.

Enjoy

Usual preliminaries for me. VA to Melbourne in J. An hour late as the aircraft had to return to gate in MEL due to a water leak. Then uneventful, until collect bags in MEL where there was an announced delay (also the next day, it seems).

Overnight at the Pullman on the Park. Was an issue here as upon entering my room (18th floor, exec lounge level), distinct unpleasant odour from the bathroom. Called reception. Asked to wait in the room until 'engineer' came. Came promptly (on Sunday- known problem in more than one room?). He announced that the shower would need treating by a chemical, and left. I noticed water around the shower outlet, so it looked as though it had been treated before, without success. No one checked?

Reception called, can move me to another room, 19th floor. Will send someone up with keys. 5 mins later, ooops, no, can't do that - so,15th floor? Same quiet characteristics that I had asked for. OK - guy comes with keys and I move don there. Nup - noisy aircon. I go down to reception - just pour some Draino down the shower outlet and I'll go back to original room. OK - I go to lounge for 90 mins while that's sorted.

Match on at MCG over the road. Afterwards, invasion by 'boisterous' footy fans in bar and restaurant - and the lounge! I didn't use my 2 free drink vouchers.

Other than that, stay OK.

To airport, check-in SQ288 (Alaskan Airlines reward ticket) which is now an A380; . Happy with that - haven't been on one of those since pre-covid; maybe never on SQ, other than in a Suite, once. Slow check-in. Sheesh, why does it take some people 10+mins to check-in? Then to SQ lounge, usual experience.

Now on board SQ288, MEL-SIN, A380. First impression - God! What a hard seat! I had to press it to see if there was any padding (a smidgeon). I'm sitting on a cushion, now. No adjustment of head/neck support; can't move leg rest independently of the seat reline. Angled-legs into cubby-hole. My BYO QR PJs on the seat.

I don’t get how people rave about SQ, and complain about QF plating?
Perhaps a plate just looks better on a laid-out table Vs a tray? Seriously - Brain thinks ‘restaurant - this looks good’ vs ‘cafe - oh, OK?’ Just a theory.

This flight was supposed to be a B777 but up-guaged to a A380 last week. I took a walk down the back and found the last mini cabin, 7 rows almost empty - and discovered row 96. Sides are single bulkhead behind an exit, middle two are bulkhead behind an access way. Singles don’t have fully wide footwell.

I snagged one of the middle two and lay down and stretched out ( with permission) with the wide footwell ( bed was still hard, though). Pretty noisy though (engines).

I will be interested to see if you experience any increases or surcharges due to fuel prices.
