So... what car do you guys drive when not flying?

Just took delivery of a new Subaru XV. Top of the range SUV with heated seats, sunroof, leather seats, built in satnav, and all the safety features you can poke a stick at.

Looked at Honda, VW, Mazda and BMW SUVs, but thought the Subi was fantastic value for how it was kitted out at $36k (I bargain hard).

One of the reasons (a major one I suppose) for purchasing a SUV is that, as my wife and I are approaching 70, sedans are simply harder to get into and out of. As I have a company car, my wife will be driving this. With her last car, a Mazda3, she did 40km in 7 years (my company car allows private usage), so given Sunaru’s reputation for reliability, this may be the last car we buy.

I had the previous model of the current one. Loved it! I sold it last year with about 50,000km on it after 5 years.

I know! My friend got a good bargain!

I’ve had my Audi now for 14 months and I’m still under 10,000km.

I got a new personal car and a work car at about the same time last year. Twelve months later they were close to 30,000km each.

I have had my work car for my new position since last Thursday and have put 1,000km on it already. I still have a trip to Bairnsdale and Melbourne to go this week too.

Some of you guys must hardly drive to church on Sunday.

I do around 40,000 kms per year. Much for work of course so cars replaced regularly.
When you live in ADL and work 7 or 8km from home ..... .
And now that I no longer work and public transport is free most times for us old folk.... .
Mind you, since giving up work and doing all these road trips, we've done more k's in the last 12 months than in the last 12 years!

Some of you guys must live in your cars.

My 2004 Porsche ragtop has 35K km on the clock. I think its done around 900km this year. My 2010 WRX has 42K km on the clock. May hit 44,000 by year end. Honda CRV 2006 has averaged 6250 a year and is now at 100,350km.

Had the head gasket replaced in the RS Focus in March as part of the recall programme, they changed the oil and other bits and pieces at that time. It's only done 9,000 km in 2 years, got a letter from Ford saying it was due for it's 30,000 or 12 month service. Told them I didn't want the oil changed, they said they had to do it anyway.
I think it's a waste of resources and not to mention the cost, new filter was $28, 0W-40W synthetic oil was $132, environmental levee to dispose of old oil was $15, filter assembly oil was a further $15, all plus 10% gst.

Not happy Jan....... I always get a follow up email and I'll tell them of the issue I have with replacing the oil and filter which has probably done less 700km. I'm sure they will say that I and the dealer have to follow the service schedule otherwise the warranty will be void.

Who is to know if they even did change the oil.

Is it part of a “fixed price service”

I have car with heated and cooled seats. I never use the heating, but my wife loves it. On the other hand, the cooling is nice.

I love the cooled seats on my car, on a 40 degree day it is very refreshing :D

Yeah the heating/cooling seats are great . Purchased a top of the range kia sportage for she who must be obeyed earlier this year . I was thinking the seat cooling was a gimmick till i experienced it . Very happy over all with this vehicle to be honest .

Is it part of a “fixed price service”

Interesting, the fixed price servicing for the normal Focus that the boss drives is $300, service for the RS is considerably more, so I'm thinking fixed price is only for some vehicles.

“Fixed price servicing” should be consigned to the dustbin along with words like “unlimited”

It is practically impossible to properly service a vehicle with only the “fixed price” bits.

My Landcruiser common rail diesel has FPS but which does not include the diesel fuel filter ($20 part). One would think that a common rail injection needs the fuel filter changed at interval. However Mr Toyota reckons just change the fuel filter only when the Filter light comes on. Except the filter light has a habit of only activating when the service department is closed and the nearest service is hundreds of km away.

I had a Hilux serviced by the dealer in Broome. They didn't do the sump plug up properly. Thankfully I noticed the leak before it was able to turn into a torrent. Same place managed to damage the body. Denied everything. When I complained to Toyota, their response was that dealer are franchises, and Toyota takes no responsibility. So, you may as well get Ultra Tune to do the work.

Mr Toyota also reckons the auto transmission fluid never needs changing even with regular towing

The procedure for checking the condition of the auto fluid quality and quantity is very high tech - just dip a finger through the transmission fill hole

I’ve tried to get a transmission flush this year when odometer hit 80k but Mr Toyota said they have never done it in a LC200
