Since when is it okay bringing a lighter on carry-on? Might as well bring on other liquid explosives where you're at it?
It is still possible to smoke in a lot of airports.

Dad carried either a lighter or matches in 2009 and smoked at every airport we visited in transit and if he could not smoke in the airport we went outside and came back through security.

IAD was fun as we had to get from midfield gates back to Main Terminal, go outside, then go back through security and back to mid-field gates. They have an Aerotrain now but cant remember what they had bacn then. Some sort of automated transport.

And LHR went outside for ~30-45 minutes and met up with Mal who brought a charger with him for my phone. I think I did the stupid thing and put the charger in my checked luggage.

Well, the man is not going to jail.

He will be fined, but the article doesn't say how much.

German escapes jail for mid-air meltdown

The article must have been updated:

Jorg, who had court proceedings relayed to him by a translator, was sentenced to 12 months' imprisonment, wholly suspended subject to a three-year, $1000 good behaviour bond.
He was fined $200 for smoking in the aircraft toilet and ordered to pay Emirates $1449 compensation for medical costs.
He was also ordered to pay $1115.22 to the crew member he assaulted to cover loss of wages and a long-haul flight allowance.

the good behaviour bond only applies in Australia. Although evidence of the conviction (if there was one) may count against him for future visa applications and/or entry into countries. that will be there for a very long time.
