I heard a comment the other day, that airlines get charged $150 for each Smart Gate scan, which gets added to a ticket price.

Seems awfully high to me, so can anyone confirm how much the Smart Gate hidden cost is and who ends up paying?

I doubt it's that much - there are some charges and processing fess included in the +++ that are supposed to cver such costs.

I just recently booked a simple Melbourne to Auckland return.

Fare component was AUD300, +++ was as follows:
AUD42.00 WY
AUD60.00 AU
AUD 4.14 WG
AUD17.70 F1
AUD16.80 KK
AUD16.80 KK
AUD11.20 IA

The cost to pay for such things would come out of the AU departure tax on the ticket .... Paid by the public

$150 sounds way off .... Makes a $99 SYD CHC JQ ticket look very cheap

It's not $150 it's actually $60.

Officially it's known as the "Passenger Movement Charge"

It's not hidden and it's added to all tickets departing Australia. It's existed before the smart gates however now that most passengers use the SmartGate departures it's all been updated to bill the airlines automatically.

Flight crew (who are exempt from the charge) can't use the departures smart gate for that reason otherwise their airline would get billed for their "departure" from Australia.

All the details and how it works are in the public domain
