Given that TID have altered the way they accept skiing and I couldn't get the discount to cover it, has anyone reviewed what's out there in the market place?

QBE look good but are still too pricey.

I am an avid skier and it is always an issue with off piste coverage. AAMI is a good one and relatively cheap. There is a good discussion over on ski.com.au about policies. I think IHG Bupa is best but very exy.

Any new thoughts on Ski insurance?

Previously TID didn't cover off piste or ungroomed runs, but they seem to cover the whole gamut now. Does anyone feel that their cover is insufficient? I have just purchased a QBE policy because I thought I wouldn't be covered for my runs through the gates but then re-read the TID policy.

The gates at Niseko are probably still not covered when unguided so QBE is probably the best fit for me.

I have always found QBE to be excessively expensive. You can get a ski add on package on some policies. I have had TID and was happy with the whole deal

My QBE with 0 excess for annual policy came to 480, including ski cover.

TID have extended their cover to heliskiing and ungroomed runs, but not unguided back country. The gates are niseko are technically back-country (outside park and unpatrolled) unfortunately.

From memory though, 480 isn't much more than TID with ski cover for an annual policy, and I get 3 QF ppd I think, with better travel and luggage delay provisions.

I was put off QBE has they had horrendous policy on delays. Has this changed recently?

I'll have to double check, it's overlapping my TID annual because I wanted the ski cover. I thought it was 6 hours though, before meal costs kick in.

I have also used insure4less.com.au which allows you to specifically select an off piste addition.

I guess the important thing is their exact definitions. Off piste may be ungroomed runs in the resort, vs taking a heli or cat to an untracked mountain. As I'm most likely to injure myself away from the resort runs, I wanted no ambiguity in my cover.

For 2016 I will have to look a bit harder.

I am off to Niseko again in February, can't wait!

I love Niseko but I'm doing the Nozawa & Hakuba combo next year, and yeah I can't wait. Re: insurance I've never regarded the gates at Niseko as being covered, despite the fact it's as busier our of the gates sometimes as in. At Nozawa Onsen everything is technically in-bounds. On my last trip there I ducked a rope and skied the entire bowl above Karaswawa - that's an 1,100 metre vertical. Definitely wouldn't have been covered for that one, but it was epic!

Yea that quote was from last year! This year I am going up to Hokkaido again but hiring a car and avoiding Niseko (been there 3 times now which is enough I think) and doing trips to a lot of the smaller mountains. With something like insure4less.com.au and the gates you would be covered if you selected the off-piste option.

Hey travelislife- any tips or thoughts on your trip over the 2014-2015 season?

I'm going for 2 months and insure4less is the only poilcy I can find which includes unguided offpiste and backcountry skiing.

I'll have a car for most of it and will base out of Niseko for about 3 weeks and Furano for about the same, except for 4 nights at Kurodake (hope its running!).

Can't wait for my hovercraft splits to arrive. :)

Here is a trip report which is very similar to what I did and my comments would be pretty similar: Trip Report - Hokkaido Road Trip 2014

I go by the same handle on that site. In that thread is comments from my trip in the very last post. Happy to answer any questions you might have.

Brilliant, thanks mate!

Favourite resorts and resorts you wouldn't hit again because they were not great (as opposed to too small for more skiing)?

Insurance and who you used/cost, if you don't mind.

Thanks again!

If you are going to use Travel Insurance provided by your Credit Card ensure that you have very closely read their Latest terms and conditions and fully understand the minute details attached
have had no problems in the past but my last ski trip involved a big claim and I missed a small change in the terms and conditions wh

Thanks for the tip, but no CC insurance will cover me for this I'm pretty sure anyway! I'm looking at around $1000-1300 for insurance for a 2 month holiday in japan because of the backcountry stuff.

Insurance wise I went with Aami, which doesn't exclude off piste, just email them and they should respond giving you in writing that it is all covered. Was good value at around $250 for a couple for 2 weeks I think.

Resort wise, I would hit them all again, I just wish we had more time, very jealous of the time you have! Asahidake was a bit different (it is one tram/cable car to the top that was actually built for site seeing) and didn't have the greatest day for the first bit just cause our guide wasn't that great but I would definitely go there again to do some more exploring myself.

Heading to Italy this year but am sure will be back to Japan the following.
