They even direct linked a thread to AFF. Joe Public reading that without a level head and an open mind is going to go absolutely bonkers.

Hopefully not too many of Joe Public read AustBT!

I think AFF should start a competing blog to ABT given the amount of 'aggregation' ie plagiarisation they do from this site. Now they're getting coin from Fairfax for it also? <facepalm>

Well AFF does already have a personal blog function, perhaps there should be a "feature this blog entry" button which lets members who feel they have written something worthwhile (rather than just a rant, so it pretty much excludes all mine) submit the blog to the moderators for quick review, and then publication to an official AFF blog.

I can't personally say I spend too much time reading other peoples personal blogs, but a list of the cream of the crop would be nice.

With close to 30000 AFF members I think the cat is truly out of the bag, cest la vie. Having read the article I have to say its very good, it's unbiased, informative and credits sources, including AFF. Well done is all I can say!

You might need to get up to speed on the history first before making such comments, David has been contributing to the SMH since at least 2000 on matters of technology such as this piece: Game Mardi Gras!

More recent contributions have been travel focused such as the executive style column:

High Flyer - Executive Style - smh.com.au

Yes well done they've...

1) Picked a hole in the market (business travel information for Australians)

2) Have perfected the art of sourcing information through a combination of mining detailed niche sites like AFF and FT and using that information for articles and making traditional PR relationships with the airline and hotel PR teams - they seem particularly cosy with some carriers already that has them on a bit of a slant IMHO

3) Getting close to some key members from these niche sites (including AFF) who feed them information directly

So I congratulate them as well.

SELFISHLY... they are publishing to a much wider & broader audience . They are also gaining a mainstream media presence that will probably surpass this site if it hasnt already. This selfishly means more eyeballs on on all our little tricks and tips and therefore less to go round etc Selfishly not so happy!

But there are some members here that have been sharing things only directly with other members (the big stuff and big loop holes in order to preserve the trick) so maybe we will see an increase in that quieter information sharing??

a bit over the ABT bashing on this forum myself. Good on him for setting up what is a very informative site minus a lot of the 'attitude' you regularly find here.

Totally agree dazz81 :)

As for the article, most people take years to accumulate 30,000 points so I wouldn't worry about the cat being out of the bag!

I used to be one of those people. Yes, it took me years to accumulate the 72,000 points that I just redeemed for J tickets. I've almost replaced the entire points in 3 months with what I've learned on this forum in the last few months.

I have tried to impart the knowledge that I've learned here with family and friends, but I'm just getting weird looks from everyone - like I'm a freak!

Personally, I think I need to "get a life" :D

**Edit.

Let me re-phrase (retract) that last sentence - I'm gonna enjoy my life a little bit more because of this forum and tell those close to me all about how they can too and direct them here. Whether they choose to action what I tell them, is then, their choice.

I actually think it shows AusBT and its editor in a better light than some AFFers might think because they linked to AFF in that blog. Considering the amount of anti-AusBT sentiment here they could easily have ignored AFF and just plugged Flightfox but linking to AFF for the flight search and the JASA article has got to be a big boost to AFFs profile, getting this in the SMH and Age. AFF probably saw a spike in traffic based on this, so it seems petty for people to be (yet again) sledging AusBT instead of seeing that this is great exposure for AFF. But some people aren't happy unless they can have their whinge I suppose.

Re: Sitting on a pile of Qantas FF points? We reveal the best and worst ways to use t

I know nothing about the history between AusBT or AFF but I love both sites and the information I've gained

Not really relevant - a spade is a spade, ie lazy, copy/paste journalism, the fact it's been ongoing for years just makes it worse!

Indeed, I actually think a sub-forum where members who have been here for x number of years or xx_x number of posts would be a good idea.....

Re: Sitting on a pile of Qantas FF points? We reveal the best and worst ways to use t

I am staying in the middle on this one.

The article was good but while I was reading it I was thinking that I have seen this information somewhere before. In fact I have posted some of that information.

Eventually most information becomes public knowledge.

Well if we look at the average frequent flyer (so an NB who signed up because it seemed like a good idea at the time), they may do say 4 SYD-MEL vv's a year on discounted tickets, so that's 8000, and add a trip to Bali return and it pushes the points up to just under 14,000. Assuming a bit of shopping in there as well and we're up to 20,000. It's going to take them 6 years to earn enough for 1 SYD-LHR vv Y ticket, assuming that they don't blow the points on a couple of the SYD-MEL vv flights prior to that. Hardly a threat to the WP's on the forum here.

Doesnt change the fact that it's not a new development like you make it out to be!

A web forum with people sharing information is a 'source' for any journalist. Big deal - if you publish your tips here on the internet expect the world around you to see it and use it.
