THere's been several threads on this on different fora over the years.

Here's a thread from July Last year: http://www.frequentflyer.com.au/com...travelling-j-class-lounge-7484.html#post92918

On FT from Feb last year:

Flight QF30 from LHR-MEL via HKG. A few questions - Page 2 - FlyerTalk Forums

&

Wing / Pier access as One World Sapphire - Page 2 - FlyerTalk Forums

I prefer the Pier over the Wing, as the former is enclosed and quieter, like others have said. The food, amenities etc are similar if not the same;). If you have time, you can visit both, otherwise I'll choose the closest to my departure gate.
Here is more info about them: CathayTalk - View Single Post - FAQ - Cathay Lounges in HK and worldwide

PS: they are stacks better than the QF lounge:(

Ah but The Wing has cabanas... ;)

(Note: Homer has never been to The Pier :-( so if The Pier also has cabanas then Homer stands corrected)

Homer does not need correction. No cabanas at The Pier. But The Pier has "Day Rooms" which The Wing does not. The Day Rooms are nice but don't have a bath. In all my uses of the Cabanas, I have only ever used the bath once. It took longer to fill than I soaked  .

Technically its not a one world benefit to be able to access ANY OW lounge when on a J ticket, just a lounge! I have been refused entry to the wing a few years ago on this basis and it looks like CX have not changed their entry requirements as posted on another thread a few weeks ago:
Cathay Pacific - At The Airport : Lounges

CX are consistant across all their lounges with this as far as the listing goes, I would be curious to hear back on what really happens on the day! Now what happened to the world of whiskeys bar that used to be in the wing, sigh, those were the days!

i am surprised that this was your experience

just 2 years ago i was with a colleague who was WP on a flight that wasn't even OW. we had 6 hours in transit at HKG and he got himself and I into the Wing just by showing his WP card

and yes, the CX lounges are easily the best in HKG. highly recommended

Two different scenarios here, one is access to lounge without any status but a J BP, the other is access with OW status. Cathay only make the distinction of caring what flight you are on for lounge access when its a J or F boarding pass, there is no requirement on the lounge access listing to be travelling with any particular airline if you have OW status (emerald or sapphire). Makes sense when you think about it, anyone can do one flight a year and buy a J ticket and so not be much of a CIP.

That's deffo an exception as you're meant to be flying OW to access a OW lounge, regardless of FF status. But it's been documented on FT that CX does make exceptions if they can somehow track high revenue spend on CX flights (regardless of the actual FFP you're accruing to).

yes there is a requirement to be departing the same day on a OneWorld marketed and operated flight.

The only place a QF Platinum FF member has "anytime" access is at a Qantas Club lounge.

And that changes to "Qantas International Business Lounge" only (ie not First Lounge) when flying Internationally but not on OneWorld/Qantas from March (?) next year.

I'm surprised the pax got admittance. Still weird things do happen, and either the CSA could have been mistaken, the pax could have been important enough to CX (or have been recognised by the CSA as a regular), or they were a smooth talker and it was their lucky day!

Wow, i didn't expect my one question to generate a huge trail of messages! But on the same theme... thanks to some last minute changes of plan, i flew to europe twice in a month and have become platinum. So now i'm about to take my first international QF flight but in economy. I've applied for an upgrade but so far no word (i understand this may come through 24hrs before?). So my question is:

As a qantas platinum, can i use the first class check in at Melbourne and is it worth it? I believe from the website i can use the new first lounge at melb (which i'm looking forward to) but can i also use the first lounges at hkg, lhr and mia of Cathay, BA and American, even though all flights will be economy (I'm paying:()?

As before, assistance would be appreciated with the best first class lounge at the above airports.... Cheers.

The best first class lounge is the one you decide after trying them all out. We are all amused by different things so what is good for one person is not necessarily the same for another person.

I mentioned that the eggs in the First Class lounge in SYD are ordinary but then some people think they are fantastic. I also mentioned that the minute steak was nothing special but other people think it is fantastic. The burger is awful. For me a lounge is a place to sit down, use the internet, nibble on some food that is remotely edible and possibly have a few drinks.

Someone elses recommendation on the best lounge is about as useful as someone elses recommendation on what is the best seat in economy for me....

Does anyone know whether we can use OW lounge on arrival in HKG?
I will arrive early and would be nice to be able to have a shower before going to the city.
I don't think the hotel will allow an early check in.

Not that i am aware, in HKG you arrive in an arrivals level and need to re-pass security to get to departures so i can't see it happening.

Correct. No way to get to the lounges upon arrival unless you have a same-day connecting flight departing from HKG. To get from arrivals area to departures you need to present a valid boarding pass for a departing flight. Lounges are only available from the secure departures area.

If you arrive early at the hotel and the room is not available, ask them to store your luggage and deliver to the room when it is available, then go out wandering around Hong Kong for a few hours until its ready.

Thanks for all the reply. I guess I will be hoping that the IC GRAND STANFORD hotel will allow me to check in early.
Who knows, being Plt Amb might help. I have put in a request for an early check in, but no answer yet (and I know it will be subject to availability)

Could well do, as i understand it Plat Royal Amb get early checking guranteed, if you room is not ready they give you another one you can use until it is. (See from T&C below) Never used the privlege yet but one day it may be useful.
But as a plat amb your not far off so lets hope for good luck on your trip.

Early check-in (8:00 am) shall be available to all Royal Ambassadors. Upgrade to an executive room or suite for Royal Ambassadors at check-in. In circumstances where an executive room or suite is not available at 8:00 am, the Royal Ambassador will be checked into an available room until the executive room or suite is available later on the day of arrival.
