Elements of this topic have been discussed at length but as a quite frequent flyer on QF dom routes where I'm very selective of my seats (where possible), here's the question.

Do you try for a vacant seat next to you or one in front (ie exit row or bulkhead). There are perils with both of course. In my recent travels, I have chosen exit row as I hate the recliners only to be seated next to a giant of a man in hi vis and thongs. Choosing the aisle of a 3 seat may give you a better chance of some spread out room but then you may get a recliner in front.

I suppose this question is not for those who travel in J or can get in row 23 so please don't reply, more us plebs who have reasonable seat selections which way do you swing ?

I prefer a aisle seat with an empty seat next to me.

I don't like exit row as it takes forever to get off the flight.

I try to get the best seat possible.

My preference is row 23 but if can't then 24 or 25 are ok as well. I don't want to go too far back as people on a plane depress me and I want to get off quickly.

In the absence of any 'extra leg room' front row seats, usually go for an exit if possible, otherwise any forward row. Always aisle (and the centre block if a twin aisle plane). Getting off quick has its advantages in certain situations (e.g. customs and immi for international, taxi queues for domestic), but at other times does not matter squat to me.

If I select an aisle seat with extra legroom, I (almost) guarantee an aisle with extra legroom. If I select any seat that currently has an empty one next to it, I cannot guarantee it will remain empty.

I usually try for an exit row seat as I am pretty tall, so the extra leg room is always nice. When an exit row seat is not available (or will cost) I do look out for seats which are more likely to have the middle seat free. There has been a few times that I've had the best of both worlds, an exit row seat + the middle seat was free... :D
