Showers at DFW in high demand - you have been warned.

I flew QF8 on last Saturday week night; impressive Takeoff roll (I timed it at 45 seconds). The 15:50 flight is very long.

The lounge had similar catering to that described; I was told it was beef brisket (pulled/shredded) and similar with chicken. Along with this went a pasta salad. This food was OK.

Interestingly, I overheard the QF Station manager telling the cooks he wanted to taste the food, obviously there have been complaints.

Good beer selection, short wine choice. There was a shelf along the back of the bar/servery with a lot of empty liquor bottles.

If you want other than wine/beer/soda, you need to ask the staff, they go in the back, return with the liquor and ice, you add your mixer if needed. The bottles are their way of saying what's on offer. Not the best.

There were two showers free at 7pm; I had one - you get a towel from the reception at the top of the elevators. By 8pm there was a queue.

After a feed I decided to go the A/C. As I passed those queuing for a shower, I told them that there were likely to be some available in the A/C. They looked surprised, but one did head off.

Oh it was brisket! I agree with the bottle issue. I attempted to get a gin and tonic but felt it was too hard to find a staff member...so sat down with an 'okay' Lindeman's chardonnay (call me lazy....who wouldnt be in those temps > 100F for the last 4 weeks).

When I flew out of DFW I used the Admirals club, the shower seemed like it had a better showerhead and the nice ladies at the admirals club desk kept giving me free drink chit things. Even though I was 20.... :p

How can you live with yourself? :p

Slightly O/T but was told in LHR T3 last month that the wait for a shower would be a couple of hours  sat down had some red and a dinner and after a little more then an hour there was one free.

I'm on QF8 in 12 hours, just read through this thread, let me see if I've got this right ...

If I want a shower, head to the Admiral's Club.
If I want food and booze, head to the Qantas (third party contracted) Lounge.

Is that right?

To answer my own question. I am in the qantas lounge right now. Wow this place is small. 36 seats total. Surely theres more than 36 status pax on a usual QF8?

As previously mentioned, food is limited but at least it's free. I had to ask for a JD. Wasn't sure if I should tip, so I did. Didn't look like the lady was actually expecting it. Wonder if she will come back and offer me another one?

This is a lounge "complex" and the rooms are interconnected. While thay can be closed off from each other at least two rooms were in use when I was there.

Assuming you are in room "4", past the buffet area go around to the left and with a few turn I ended up in room "3" (IIRC).

So after heading down to buy my duty free, I decided to try the admirals club as the qantas lounge was a zoo and I knew I wouldn't get a seat.

The AC is huge, and the Internet actually works. Now if could just find someone to get me a drink ...

Yeah good point, you're on the wagon there until you're 21 there right?

Unless you are the Bush daughters!!

You head to the bar with your drink chit and tip a single or two a drink. That will ensure your 'free' drinks are doubles :)

Last month we were in the DFW QF lounge for almost 4 hours after arriving on an AA flight from TLH.
No problem getting a shower that early, but I couldn't believe there were no hairdryers .
The guy manning the desk leading to all the lounges said hairdryers were a safety issue!
When I asked what the issue was, he said electricity and water don't mix!!! I hope all the other lounges around the world don't go the way of DFW.

Hair driers available in the showers in the AA lounge, just a couple of gates away. The electricity must be more ... Electric... in the part-time & QF lounge.

Good to know for next time, thanks.
I'd rather not carry a hairdryer if I can help it.

I can think of a couple of (possible) reasons:

Here's two [Conjecture only]:

  • Open bar prior to QF international flights; while drinks are "complementary" for eligible QF PAX in the A/C's there is still the bar tender/tipping to contend with.
  • Having this lounge facility available costs QF less than sending PAX to the A/C's.

Showers at the AAdmirals club were great when I was there. The barman said he collected foreign currency so I tipped him in lots of AUD change...

just to bump this thread.......

Any recent comment-worthy experiences on QF8?

I'm on it next month in 1A - so looking forward to sleeping ;)

Just arrived home on QF8 this morning.
it's much the same as described here, & this matches my last 3 times through DFW.
follow the maze of rooms around past the hot offerings. Or go left once you are inside the lounge & it will take you straight to tables & chairs and an office setting at the end of room 4. if you walk around the corner there are cold snaks & all the beverages available. Loos both at the entrance, as well as further along to the left.

They had chicken with sage, as well as shredded beef. Salads, sandwiches. 2 whites, 2 reds, a bubbly, spirits made to order, beers, soft drinks, selection of teas & espresso machine. I saw 4 maybe 5 staff circulating, all pleasant & helpful.

A couple of People queuing for the showers. Didn't ask if the electricity has settled enough for them to allow hair dryers yet!

I do find the staff warmer than those in the F lounge at TBIT in LAX. But food & beverage selection, & showers at TBIT are better. Probably a better comparison is the old lounge at TBIT where I never found a shower, nor any hot food. Plenty self serve grog though.

In some lounges I feel like an awkward visitor, in that they havn't got the hospitality comfortably sorted. Other lounges are just a lot more in my comfort zone. Walk in, greeted, find a chair, fill a plate with tasty hot food that looks like a meal, grab a glass of something to match, all without feeling scrutinized or having to ask for favours.

I had 2A a few weeks back. The folk in 1A & 1?K barely stirred after their cheese boards were cleared! Very private.

The AC at gate 24 is roomy & open, nice showers. But I don't like the food & bar service much. And they do always try to tell me to go to the QP instead.

Thanks storyteller.

I've had 2A (true first) before and liked the look and privacy of 1A.

Was meant to be in 1A (J) ex SFO last year but got subbed to a refurbed aircraft so went back to trusty old 16A instead.

Sounds like showers at the A/C are the go.

Although I only have a 90 minute transit in DFW so won't need to lounge hop for terribly long.

cheers

If you like a nice chili sauce, Cousins makes & bottles their own & will wrap it well for travelling. Found them last time, a bit further down from the AC.

Oh, and Crew on QF 8 were great. Everything they should be, happy to be onboard.
