Yes when I read the OP noting he boarded with THREE kids and did not specify the ages, that was my first thought!

Did 44 hours of long haul last week in biz, and like most here, the stories we could all write about kids in biz on long flights ...............

All parents of course vehemently declare THEIR offspring were superbly behaved!

But that aside, agree it sounds like a nasty experience all round. Hope they throw the book at that guy.

Touch wood I've never these sort of experiences on a plane. When you do the numbers as you would in society, out of say 300 people there is someone who is special.

1/300=0.3%. I reckon maybe 2% - say 6 of the 300?

Clearly airlines should have Oxycodone tablets or injections handy.

I'd be happy to stick a needle into his neck as often as necessary, while others held him down.

And what if you hit the carotid or some other important structure in the neck? Or accidentally injected it into your assistant?

(Grimace) drugs don’t work like you see in the movies. But the drug you are looking for is propofol.

Have you tried to inject propofol into anything that is not a vein?

Getting caught short like that is the stuff of nightmares. It would be reassuring to know that they had adult nappies on board if the tummy was bad enough(?) Geez, I'm so worried now maybe I need to put a couple in the carry on.

Sounds dreadful. I guess anyone can have tummy issues though. But the guy in handcuffs - it’s going to happen more frequently I think.

Oh yeah. Sickness is somewhat more manageable and acceptable when the bag can be accessed. The other - well, I dare say there’s not one of us who haven’t traveled who haven’t experienced those “oh no, please dear god no” moments.

Or are there special rules in place for restraining/handcuffing a passanger on a plane? I never knew they even have handcuffs on board. I wonder what other goodies they have also lol

Well yes, but probably somewhere around the three hour mark into the flight? The crew tried to de-escalate first. Not following a direction does not automatically mean the person is a danger to themselves or other passengers. It would depend on the circumstances. Restraining someone can lead to a whole range of potential issues.

Behaving ERRATICALLY and not following direction...…...that's got to start the crew thinking there is a potentially dangerous situation brewing.

Im actually shocked they even took off with him on board after his performance during taxiing.

I once saw a couple deboarded (before takeoff) due to them having what looked to be a pretty mild argument in the row in front of me. Apparently the pax next to them complained and the pilot decided he didnt want to take the risk of having them on the same plane. The debacle delayed the flight by over 2 hours.

Unsupported assertion - you don't explain why a drug known to knock people out and cause constipation won't work.

Well, if so - it would be a case of try and try again, till one gets it right.
Not sure why you are assuming I'm blind or so severely visioned impaired that I can't tell the flight crew from the nutter.

seems like a mental issue-the pooing brat is much worse as the stench will linger for the entire flight!
Had some bad experience myself flying EY from FRA-ABU DHABI-_SYD-a young gal around 20-was seated front of me-started with the constant buzzing of the staff-ordering booze-unfortunately they obliged-than the rag picked up some German business man travelling behind me and she put out her tenticles on him big time-so the whole night flight was ruined as the cough was shouting and laughing and carrying on-sitting in his lap doing all sort of things-before landing when the seatbelt sign came on they went to the bathroom to have the magic end-so after that mile high cough they staggered out just before landing-I complained to the crew many times and they put her in a watch list for the next flight which I took as well-the drunken rag by than behaved a bit better as she slept most of the time but still tried to pick up some man from the crew-she was a spoiled little brat-papa dear paid for her trip "downunder" while she ruined all others -selfish coughes like that should be denied boarding!I confronted her by the way telling her that she ruining the experience and all she could say maybe I should get laid and than I would shut up! Nice attitude is it?

1)... in high doses maybe and there is a delay in action depending on where you injected it. Constipation takes several days to kick in. And constipation and diarrhoea often coexist.
2) In a struggle and a moving target? I hope for the sake of the crew you have accurate aim.
3) again you have cannulated a vein?. What would happen if you injected propofol into anything other than a vein?
4) lets say you are a good aim, in which case I hope you are good with CPR and have advanced resuscitation equipment with you. Good samaritan protection wont exist in these cases. Hope you have indemnity
5) In any case none of these drugs will ever be available

Of course not. And to stress that my view about trying to sedate a person is a really, really unworkable and dumb idea. This has been discussed in another thread before so I won’t repeat what I said. But frankly, this is unworkable.
And opiates? Nup. Dumb.

It must have been pretty serious to handcuff the passenger. But we absolutely do have sets of handcuffs on board, but can only be used with the Captain’s permission. Give this was an SQ flight I’m not sure how their regulations work, but under Australian law:

Civil Aviation Regulations of (1988) gives legal powers to aircrew during flight. The Captain also holds powers under the Crimes (Aviation) Act 1991 to arrest without warrant or restrain any person on board who commits an offence against that Act. These powers should only be used after a serious offence has been committed. All other offences described as disorderly, disruptive, or unruly should be dealt with by the powers set out in CAR (1988) 309 (1). Arrest and restraint of a passenger is a serious outcome and must only be used as a last resort.

Is it handcuffs or cable ties? Handcuffs would seem to introduce an unnecessary risk (if the key went missing for example during an emergency).

Also to note that while the captain’s authority may be absolute on board the aircraft, they can still be held accountable for their actions once the plane has landed (in other words, you still have to act reasonably).

We have handcuffs. Cable ties went out some years ago.
