Sometimes Ive read threads here and soon after the story line pops up on AustBT or news.com.
It is a suspicious first posting.

Before it was edited by a moderator, the post included full and explicit details on how and where to sell points.

Selling points is against the terms and conditions but it's not illegal. I didn't have what to do with my 350k points as I have a family of little kids and don't fly often at all. I sold them for 3500 USD. I haven't had any issues. They booked tickets and the passengers flew. I am still accumulating points.
I wouldnt crow too loud. technology has the ability to move in mysterious ways

If the ATO concludes this activity resulted in a capital gain or other form of earned income and if this income remains undeclared then, after just speaking with a lawyer, the ATO *may* have the right to subpoena the AFF webserver/database server to gain your personal details and pursue you.

I missed the original post. It was basically advertising by the sound of it?

Interesting theory

I'd sell my points if I could. They're just sitting there gathering dust waiting to be wasted on poor redemptions.

Gift cards are one way out but such poor value.

Well I wish I could buy points cheaper than 60000 for $1425 that Qantas offers. But seems that is cheap compared to the dodgy online method. Not to mention the booking would likely be made from an account with no status and hence rubbish award availability.

You can buy points for way less then that, it just generally comes with a credit enquiry attached :p:p

I think that would be buying a credit card... the points are a free bonus... ;)

or buying points and getting some wine thrown in for free. 7000 points can often be purchased for <$300 and comes with 6 or 12 bottle of wine.

Well yes, I brought wine at 2.2 cent per point yesterday.
Qantas sells points for 2.4 cents per point

The going rate for QF points is 1.2 cents per point on ozbargain classifieds. There is a booming market. I have never made a transaction but I occasionally check in to see what's going on there. It's a wild west. Honors points, Amex MR, SPG points and Krisflyer points are also up for grabs.

Not as high as I would have expected. Doesn't put much value on 1.1 million points.

I was surprised too but it is seemingly the equilibrium between supply and demand. I trained as economist in a former life which is probably why I am so curious about the illicit market for points as fiat currency.

And yes when Joe Punter can buy 1.1 million points in a foul swoop for around 12k, it makes you sometimes question the value of dealing with the likes of Citibank et al.

and you will receive some (hopefully half-decent) wine in the post shortly. Enjoy (the points and the wine).

Though Joe Punter is also punting on not having his flights denied to him if QFF happens to smell a rat.

Whereas with Citibank et al you at least know that once you have the points that they will be honoured.
