Looking at QF plus Expert Flyer, the J seat map for QF64 on 8/8/13 is different to anything I have experience with.

Can anyone help with layout & type of seat?

EF doesn't give the usual pop up of a description.

The flights to JNB often have missing seats as they are allocated to the SAA codeshare. Is that the sort of thing you are seeing? Missing seats?

(or maybe its a case of not seeing!)

No seats 2ab, 3ab, 5ak, 6ab, 11jk, 12jk, 14jk, 16Ab.

Front seats in seat map are 1ab & qjk, but I didn't think there was room at the pointy end.

Strangest looking seat map!

Its a refurbished 3 class. Go for 5B or 5J or 14A.

(5A/K physically don't exist)

Here's a pdf of the map: http://www.qantas.com.au/infodetail/flying/inTheAir/ourAircraft/744ER-58J36W270Y.pdf

Here's E/F views of the QF flight and it's codeshare:

Thanks. I can see now how the code share pulls seats out, rather than shows them as blocked, which is how I had figured they would show.

Any idea what is in the space to the window side of 5b / 5J? Room for the people behind to try to squeeze through? Or maybe just a nice little table for me to rest my book & glass on :)

Its a storage compartment (nee a little locker type thing) which opens from the horizontal, so can also be used as a table.

Ran over to change my seat - but alas, all gone. Will keep my eyes peeled now that I know, thanks again Oz_Mark, Serfty & Markis10 :)

One of the reasons I like the upper deck is the locker by the window - a bit more room to spread out & my stuff is right there.
Thanks for the pic. This seat looks like it fits the bill very nicely :)

Hi,

We will be a couple coming back from JNB on QF 64.

I understand that windows on one side of the plane can get a good view of Antartica?

I assume that on JNB_SYD that would K/J. Being a couple we will go for seats together rather than a window seat each, and having to climb over a stranger mid-flight.

For a couple which row, and which cabin (upstairs/ downstairs) would you recommend?

Flight departs at 6.15 PM, with dinner and breakfast served. 11hr 50m duration. So we will have dinner and several hours of movies etc to enjoy before we try to sleep.

I have only been in J once on a 747 and that was on a short overnight flight, which we boarded late at night on, where we went for the upstairs cabin as we thought it would be quieter for a flight that we were mainly just sleeping on.

For 2 of us I prefer upstairs. Quieter, nice locker on window side. The pointy end is also a bit private, but you won't be hand holding reach if you want a window. Though I don't know which aircraft they are using on the route this year.

On my own I try for the Serfty / Markis10 special ;)
You're right, K seat for any chance of Antarctica.

if this for your 2015 trip? Lucky B

And my preference is row 12.

OT. Oh, btw, be sure you leave an extra 2 hours purely for shopping airside in JNB pre international departure. There is some great stuff there at reasonable prices, & over several trips, none of the womenfolk ever had problems with the extra bags on boarding. In fact, when we were there a few years ago, they were selling some tall wooden giraffes, & said they could securely pack one & get it in with the checked bags. No worries. This was airside shops!
Hmm, if you are driving you will likely already have bought some lovely stuff. And at Vic Falls there are also very nice things. Carvings, table cloths etc. Still, the shops at JNB are always a very pleasant surprise :D

Back on topic. What does your seat map look like for configuration?

Howdy ,
I flew on QF 63 last year ( SYD > JNB) in Y towards the back of the 747, I had a window seat on the right hand side heading over to JNB, so I'm thinking for a chance of a view of the Antarctic ice sheets a window seat on the Right hand side might give you a chance should the pilot fly South & visibility is good. Although I'm lead to believe for QF 64 the tail winds are favourable & the journey rarely goes as South as the journey on QF 63.
Here are a few photos I took on my trip on QF 63 last year :ImageUploadedByAustFreqFly1407754771.580700.jpgImageUploadedByAustFreqFly1407754843.301449.jpgImageUploadedByAustFreqFly1407754912.720429.jpgImageUploadedByAustFreqFly1407754969.475505.jpg

I'm flying to Africa return in November this year on QF 63/64. Keeping my fingers crossed I get another cracking view like I did last year!

I have not yet booked the return flight as availability has yet to open up for my travel dates as I will be flying back in August.

I am just getting prepared so that I can get my preferred seats on booking.

Fantastic Photo's! But correct me is I am wrong, the look like they are taken from the Port (Left) side of the aircraft.

Correct! Good observation skills!

These photos were taken when seated on the left hand side when seated on QF 63.

( When seated on QF 64 then the right hand side would be preferable for the better window views).
