Would any kind soul with access to expertflyer be able to check out availability for 2 x upgrades to business on:

Syd-LHr QF1 11th May 5pm

LHR-Syd QF2 22nd May 10.15pm

If not upgrading, we currently have managed to get the emergency exit rows (58H/J) for both journeys, although now looks like my (6'4") partner would rather go back to a 'standard' row to get the window. Originally we had rows 36/38.

Seatguru seems to suggest the rows at the back (73?) are good for couples as they only have 2 seats - plus the handrest can be raised, which it can't on emergency rows, which might make it more comfortable.

Usually preferring to stay near the front, does anyone have any views on this?

Many thanks!

You cannot book upgrades on international flights; you need to request an upgrade and see whether it has been granted when you check in, so there is nothing to check for on EF

Stick with 58HJ, definately the way to go; far more comfortable than going for the 2 seats near the back; anyway , on QF1, there are no sets of 2 seats available to take

U is showing zero for both dates on the QF flights via KVS

Thanks for that Ioki, though following Dave's reply maybe they just don't put U availability for int flights. I guess monitoring the J might be more useful closer to the date...

For international flights, U is now only used for award seats. So unless you want to book a full award business class seat and cancel your paid economy seat, U availability is not gong to help. Upgrades do not come out of U anymore for international flights. They come from any seats QF yield management believes they cannot sell, and that decision is made somewhere in the 24 hours (or so) before the flight.

So if you want to upgrade, then get on the waitlist.

Oh, I didn't know that... I guess it must be the case if you think about it. So the same applies to Z and upgrades to First then?

Yes it does.

So if I was looking to use my FF points for an upgrade early Jan from MEL-LON-MEL on QF9 and 10 from Y to J - I wouldn't be confirmed until 24 hours before the flight departed?

Actually, according to the Qantas Frequent Flyer Terms & Conditions, flyers will be advised whether or not they have been awarded a Flight Upgrade when they check in for their flight.

However, some have been able to report seeing changes against their booking that possibly indicates success up to a day or so before scheduled departure. This is throughsomething like Qantas MMB or Amadeus CheckMyTrip

This tends to be the case from my experience, and other anecdotal reports.

Have a look at this thread:

I found out the day of my flight that I had got my upgrade by checking Qantas MMB and seeing that the upgrade credit/points had been debited from my account. This was about 10hrs before I was due to fly

I just put in my upgrade request from J to F for SIN-MEL on 5 May, and had to do it via phone as the on-line system kept dropping me out when I hit the upgrade button! However, the very polite lady did inform me there is no 2,500 point charge for the assisted upgrade at least. She also stated the upgrade would be confirmed 24 hours prior to flight, and the points debited at this time. I cannot change my mind after this time, without losing the 25,000 points.
Fingers crossed it comes through for my first F experience :D

Change of Plan

My partner's company now wants him to go to a meeting in Europe as we are going to be 'in the area'. So at very short notice looks like we are probably going to leave Sydney on Monday (8th) evening now, ideally still QF1. Need to wait for his travel organisers to get into the office in the morning.

Can anyone see what the seating situation is like for this flight, whether we end up having to stay in economy or can manage to swing the points upgrade? On our original flight (Thursday 11th), we had been given the emergency exit rows on the basis of my Platinum and his height :)

Many thanks, once again...

Updated seating question

My original query was regarding seating on our upcoming trip to UK on QF1.

At the time we were leaving on Thursday 11th May, but have now had to bring the timing earlier and have moved the flights to QF1 on Monday 8th.

I was allocated the exit row based on platinum status, but then we decided to cancel that because of the fixed armrests - for a journey of that length it would probably be better to be able to lift the rests and have a bit more space and flexibility.

So the latest seats we have on the outbound journey are 34a and 34b. These front bulkhead seats sound great, particularly because the Qantas telephone staff member who I spoke to to arrange it said he was certain that the armrests in these seats are NOT fixed, he said he flew in them a few weeks ago.

However, the seatguru website indicates that these seats do have a fixed armrest. Hard to know which to believe!

Currently we are still waitlisted for a points upgrade.

However, if the Qantas guy is correct and the armrests are moveable, this sounds like a great seat placement for economy and I would prefer to cancel the upgrade request and hold onto my points for a future journey.

With the last minute timing of this, it is possible that upgrades will be allocated in a few hours, so i need to be quick if I am going to cancel before they are allocated!

Any advice anyone online could offer in a short timeframe would be much appreciated!

IME, these seats have fixed armrests... hoever I have not been in one for 4+ years as I prefer 35H/J/K.

Recent experience with a 23K in a 333 was the left armrest contains a tray-table and hence does not move, the right one beside the window actually lifts up (FWIW, the right armrest for 24K does not lift up).

So it is possible that the left armrest for 34A may lift up, but I'm pretty sure that the other armrests in that row will not.

As a general rule, on most airlines/aircraft types that have a meal tray, the armrests are going to be fixed on the front row (either bulkhead or exit row). This is because generally trays aren't attached to the wall and with no seat in front the only place it can be is in the armrests.

There are exceptions - eg LH shorthaul fleet does have a tray on the wall (extra long to allow for the extra distance it needs to cover), some aircraft have a special tray that has legs that slot into holes on the sides of the seat, etc.

Hi there,

My wife & I are flying to London in July, returning the same month. We are Freq Flyer Mem and have been assigned 40 K & H on the outbound flight. On previous flights we have been given the emergency exit seats due to my height. I was under the impression that these seats could not be pre-booked?
Any information on how avail of these seats would be greatly appreciated!
Cheers

CL, WP & a few fortunate others can request these seats to be preallocated.
