I have flown many times on Crash-8's and in general most PAX are preallocated toward the rear of the aircraft for lightly loaded flights; indeed, as previously posted, it is for weight reasons.
Point taken.

I still don't understand why any dingbat would allocate the whole of row 7 to individual passengers and leave the few remaining few passengers scattered around the cabin. Maybe they knew I was sitting in that row.

Forget dingbats; that is standard preallocation for Crash8's.

I saw it MANY times when I used to commute MEL/CBR once a week. ¼ - ½ full flights would have most PAX pre-allocated in a "clump" underneath, or just behind, the wing.

It's no different on the SAAB's that Rex? fly. When they are lightly loaded, everyone seems clumped together (at the back of the plane)

In essence it would be better to pre-select rows 9, 10, 11 or 12 on lightly loaded flights as it would almost guarantee a row to oneself.

Its all to do with zones and load weighting
If you spend too much time in tehm you automatically know wher you can move to before takeoff
Blame the load calculating guy who does it all
And i still think i have more leg room in dash 8 than a 737

Without a doubt. Although the seats are a little narrower which is not an issue for most passengers.
