Just made a booking on AB. I understand that OWEs get free seat selection but their website doesn't allow that. My booking shows up on my QFF account but I also can't select seats through the MMB function. There are no Australian-based phone numbers to call either. Any advice about getting an XL seat would be greatly appreciated!

I booked mid last year and while it showed up in QF MMB, I couldn't actually manage anything that way. Did check-in etc through AB site. Being lower status I just paid the seat fee, but it all worked out very well.

The Platinum oneworld benefit is preferred seating (where available). Ie a bit of a cop out.
Not aware the AB has preferred seating

Just call frequent flyer service desk. They can put you in the exit row or front row seats. Free for OWS/OWE from memory. Remember Air Berlin is a LCC, but still better than Jetstar.

Are you referring to the QF service desk or the AB service desk?

I just emailed air Berlin. They allocated the exit rows without any issues at all

IIRC you can select any seat (including exit row seat) for free as a OWE when making the booking directly on AB website. The MMB function on AB is totally useless once the booking has been made.

When I tried to select seats, front section seats were blocked out and they wanted to charge me for making any seat selection at all!

Emailing would be much easier. I'll try that first. Thanks for the suggestion.

Update:
Used the airberlin website and sent off a seat request via their e-contact service for the XL seats on my NIKI flight. Got a quick response saying that the email had been lodged, thnen got formal reply within 48 hours with confirmation of seats for the flights. I gave them my QFF number and highlighted that I was QFF platinum and OWE. No charges imposed. Easy! Now my seat assignments are on my booking that I can see on my QFF account. :D

I travelled on AB OCT13 last year as a QF Gold (OWS) and was able to select seats via the QF MMB page 2 seperate bookings

Booking 1- ALC TXL - booked direct on AB website with my QFF number in the PNR . I was able to select any avaiable seat via QF.COM( booked row 1 only Y cabin)

Booking 2 - TXL AUH - Booked over the phone with QF on points. Was able to select any J seat avaiable on the aircraft Via QF.Com.

I think AB are still on Amadeus ( same as QF) so as long as your FFN is in the PNR , It should be displayed on MMB on QF.COM and allow things like seat selection.

I think this only recently changed. My QFF number was in my booking and I could see it in my QFF account but nowhere to select seats under the MMB function. However, when AB confirmed my seat selection, the reserved seat numbers came up on my booking in my QFF account.

I made a booking on AB two days ago and I could see how things have changed since my first booking with them (they had just joined OW and at the time I was able to select exit row for free during booking process). So as MH_fan reported, this time I simply requested Row 1 seats through AB website request form (https://www.airberlin.com/en-SE/site/kontaktformular_a.php then select: Your booking / Special services / Seat reservation) and got the seats allocated in less than 12 hours. Not the most efficient way to go, but it works!

Does row 1 on the AB and HG A320s have extra legroom? Reports I have read suggest that the legroom is quite restricted due to the bulkhead.

I don't think there is extra legroom in row 1 on the 737 or A320. I'm flying short sectors (ARN-TXL-MUC) with a 30 min connection in TXL, so my choice of row 1 is mostly about getting out of the aircraft as soon as I can (which is my main priority when flying AB or BA in Europe:p)

Woah. 30 mins connection is going to be pretty tight!

I had a look at this and AB actually allow connections of 25 minutes! Not sure my checked bag will follow me though...
