I suspect it would get even more interesting on airlines that require $$ to pre-select (specific) seats.
If I'm sitting in my correct seat and another passenger comes along and says they (also) have a BP for the seat, I'm happy to have the cabin crew adjudicate.

It is very easy to be cynical about many seat change requests...due to the simple fact (already mentioned) that when two adults "want to sit together" it INVARIABLY means they want to sit together in Row 4... where 1 has a seat allocated... not row 57..where the other one is....

I can always remember one of my early flights, 25 odd years ago, ADL > MEL and went to my "already occupied" seat. When I said it was my seat, the reply from a very muscled gentleman "yes I know". That was it, I was too young and scared to say anything, squashed in the centre seat not muttering a word hoping the flight would finish as quick as possible. I would certainly treat it very differently now, but just shows over time, each and every case is different.

Totally agree with everyone.
It hasn't happened to me on a flight, but it would very uncomfortable if the offending person was being rude about it !!
On a similar note though..I went to the movies last week with allocated seating. Two people in our seats. I said, oh, sorry, I think you are in our seats. They said.....well someone was in our seats, so we sat here !! They were not moving.
Ok, so we sat in the row in front, and hoped someone didn't come along to us and say.....you are in my seats....haha
Luckily, it was not a full cinema, and no one approached us. However, it can get very messy can't it.
