Hi all,

Just got off flight SYD-MEL and while waiting for pickup went back through into QP.

When going through screening was asked to remove all spray cans from carry-on. Did not need to do this in Sydney nor any other airport.

Are Melbourne people scared of Rexona? Do they just like to impliment rules to annoy people? or is there a valid reason that other airports do not request this?

Your thoughts.....

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

AFF Supporters can remove this and all advertisements

I can't recall this happening anywhere other than MEL (has been this way there for a while), but I guess, as per the previous post, it does occur at other ports.

SYD a couple of weeks ago i was asked.
It is i think a requirement, they just seem to from time to time make a deal out of it.

Hit and miss for me in domestic airports. Sometimes I'm asked and sometimes not.

There was a post back a while ago about x-ray sensitivity and I think it was NM who suggested they vary the sensitivity, perhaps airport security do the same regarding aerosols..

Usually only happens at Melbourne to me. Other airports sometimes want to see the aerosol (to check that a cap is on it), if they see it in the x-ray machine.

OOL are also rather cough about aerosols. Not sure what the issue with them is, as I could easily get rid of the cap after security and before boarding the plane.

If you regularly lose the cap, the new Rexona aerosols have a lock on them.

To combat Rexona-phobic issues at airport security, I recommend crystal deodorants because they solid so they do not fall foul of aerosol or liquid rules :D

Another funny one is lighters - one of our sales guys who is giving himself lung cancer has on a couple of occasions (the last being ROK) asked to remove his lighter from hand luggage and place in his pocket at the screening point...

Go figure that one out!

Mr!

...

Are Melbourne people scared of Rexona? ...

Duh! No, its the other way around! People from the PRV (People's Republic of Victoria) are checked for Rexona on the way out of state so when you are standing in a line of people and someone reeks of stale stinky sweat, you will know instantly they are not from the PRV due to the Rexona requirements!

On the screening subject, has something changed with the international liquid carry-on restrictions?

Going through CHC security on the way to SYD last Saturday, I never heard peep about liquid restrictions and even saw a lady beside me hold out a nearly-full bottle of water for surrender at the xray and had it waved through?

Or was this just lax security?..

In Montreal (YUL) it was as as strict as ever... had a toothpaste roll that was 80% used but because the capacity was greater that 100ml it was taken (thank goodness LAX TBIT QP has toothpaste for those using the showers)

TSV must be very strict then..I've seen security confiscate both lighters and aerosols from people. I get asked whether I have either on a regular basis.
IME BNE is the laxest..they seem to regularly be not paying attention to what they're doing...like yesterday on my way home (BNE - TSV) woman at xray machine was talking to colleague and only gave a cursory glance at my ports.

Back aways in the good old days of the fabulous Ansett, they would always take your lighter off you and put it in a box in the coughpit(along with various pocket knives and other contraband). They would return it to you as you disembarked, but then the Ansett FA's would often send you off with a freshly opened bottle of wine wrapped in newspapers...*sigh* memories...:)

I thought you took the aerosol out of your bag and into a tray on the x-ray so the staff can see it's deodorant and not something like spray paint......

Now there's a thought, seeing some graffitiist's 'tag' all over the seats.

A really big problem for a lot of Australian screeners is small, collapsible umbrellas. Victoria in particular is red hot on them. They have to be taken out of your carry-on and unfurled, to ensure... what?

The only other place in the world (and I travel a lot) that I have found an umbrella phobia is Indonesia, and only when travelling Qantas, when my small umbrella was confiscated. I was told it was due to Qantas' regulations.

What is it with Australians and small umbrellas?

I have been hearing the occasional announcement by security personnel in SYD and BNE since earlier this year to put aerosols separately through the x-ray. One time I forgot I had some deodorant in the bag and they detected it and put the deodorant and the bag back through the x-ray machine separately.

I've found it really hit and miss at all airports (at least all the major OZ ones + CBR). Sometimes I get asked for it, othertimes they couldn't care less (even when I've got it out to hand it over without being prompted).
