So OOL is now officially the LCC terminal for BNE

Hmm...will Scoot be forced to pay crew in AUD or SGD wage conditions? If in SGD (+ wages and conditions), how is this different to a JQ Int foreign based flight crew?

They dont have international crew doing domestic sectors - ie JQ35 which is mostly Thai on 2K a month.

Gives Gold Coast residents a cheap way to Singapore and onward connections as well as drawing tourists into the GC from SE Asia, will be interesting to see how they go....

Has been like that for a long time.

JQ mostly started it (switching Japan flights to OOL rather than BNE). D7 jumped onto the bandwagon, too.

If it means prices come down (due to more competition), great win for everyone l guess (except the airlines, lol).

I would have thought Air Asia were already serving the purpose!

Thats a pretty good wage for a Thai resident.

<off topic>

But not such a great wage for an Australian. Xenophon would argue that these routes (tag flights) should be operated by Australian on Australian wages, else the latter because we uphold an equality ideal in this country which means people doing a job in Australia should do so at the standard award rate.

These aircraft would be using SIN registered aircraft ie with a "9V" prefix so no issue with foreign crews operating flights.

Oh I agree - but reckon its nice for people to have the choice of KUL or SIN.

Supposedly, though D7 had an excellent hub in KUL for the purposes of sending people to their real destinations (like Bali, Indonesia, Thailand etc.)

Besides, the budget conscious traveller probably would enjoy themselves more in KUL than in SIN (latter is more of a splurge).

As it stands, hubs aside it really is just Singapore Airlines trying to "get into the game".

It will be interesting to see how Scoot will network from SIN, or rely on connections with SQ or MI, in order to compete with something like D7/AK/etc.

Sorry, l miss read somewhere.
If the flights are running (example), SIN-OOL-SYD, the OOL-SYD legs, should put those workers (or whomever is working on that sector) on Australian wages and conditions.

I agree with the SIN/KUL hub comments, but they are both good hubs to catch everywhere from China to the Middle East inbound tourism market IMO. There probably is an element of Scoot being a way of "getting into the game" for SG but it would be a bit churlish and hypocritical of us to deny them the opportunity to do it.

Scoot is not entirely about bringing Australians to SE Asia, the other way around is also as, if not more important. People travel to SIN-OOL via KUL but obviously would prefer not to have the >3hr detour north. I am sure Scoot will be very focussed on its home market, taking (even more) locals to the world. After all SIN is a small island, and travel I think is no 3. national pastime after shopping and eating.

Quite true - again, this is part Singapore Airlines trying to "get into the game" which they've been "missing out" on.

It's quite amazing how much LCCs have (re)shaped Singaporeans views on travel. Some Singaporeans before probably couldn't be caught dead flying on Air Asia or the other LCCs. Now its mainstream. (Mind you, the Indian community in Singapore has a lot on this, with low cost flights to and from India very popular. Ditto for the Filipinos and Philippines.) It's not unusual to hear of people catching the bus from Singapore to Sepang/KUL in the crazy hours to make low cost flights operated by the Air Asia group.

I know this is drifting OT, but how do other airlines deal with 'tag-on flights' in other countries? I know that some companies in WA were using foreign workers out in the mines (cheap wages) and started to abuse the employees. It has since stopped.

What about QF, SYD-LAX-JFK and QF crew conditions? Or, is this a special sector where you can't purchase the internal QF flight in the US and the point is useless? LH/BA, do they do tag-along flights to the USA, if so, do they change crew?

I shake my head that foreign carriers can see the importance in OOL , yet our own national carrier(QF) still doesn't find the necessity to fly at least one route out of the 6th busiest airport in the country. It really is a joke and a missed opportunity.
