Scoot review OOL-SIN (19th June 2012) - Don't get me started!!! :@

All airlines have delays for tech and safety reasons.
I had a 9 hr delay on one of the first JQ MEL-SIN lounges. I believe most PAX got food vouchers at MEL, a $150 credit voucher in the air and some hotel voucher.

I just enjoyed my 11-hrs in the First Lounge....
 
The flight back on "Barry" wasn't as bad (SIN-SYD). However a few points to be made:

- Tray tables were still dirty. This has happened out of SIN and OOL now, so I wonder when the plane goes in for a proper clean.

- Crew were much more talkative, and saw a trainer onboard.

- They are funny about when they secure. They will ask you to bring seats up, check gadgets before the official secure starts. I find this annoying (many different airlines have crew who do this) from any airline, and on my two Scoot flights both sets of crews did this. Before the final door closed, one crew member saw my iPad on the floor, and requested to see that it was OFF. Was very strange, because they actually were about to do the same thing to my partner on decent, but he said he didn't have his phone on him.

- Heard a few call bells, but nothing extreme. Still not sure if the first flight's crazy call bell problem was caused by silly design or system failure.

- Ordered the comfort pack. Didn't get it delivered until we saw the F&B service start and asked about the pack. They had to check the manifest, and then my partner's ticket (I had lost mine). Seemed like a lot of mucking around.

- Food was better out of SIN (I read somewhere that it's return catered from SIN).

- Seats were ROCK hard (didn't notice this on first flight... strange). Still slept a good 5+ hours (flight was at 2am, and we had done Universal Studios and the Singapore Flyer, with LOTS of walking in between).

- Water bubblers spits out gross water (although seems to be different water to toilets, as I would have guessed seeing as that's not potable water). No cups nearby, need to go to galley.

- PSU oxygen masks dropped from one row down the back. Taped up displaying the masks 'out'. Should have something over the seats displaying "UNSERVICEABLE", because anyone could move/go to sleep there.

As I've said before, this airline is only good if it's cheaper than any other airline on the same route. I would not fly this airline if I could upgrade to a 'real' airline for, say, $200-/+ pp.

I appreciated your time in posting your return flight TR. Hope your land time in Singapore was nice. I'm going to also do a flight on Scoot shortly.. so will also post my review. I'm never overly keen about any LCC.. But not to be critical without first hand experience..

Thanks for the update. Just wondering did the seats look new or did they look like they were old ones that had been refurbished?
 
It's hard to say. The loos, galleys etc looked old. The carpet looked like it was Singapore Airlines design, but still looked quite 'refreshed'/as-new.

Not having been on Singapore Airlines' 777, it's hard to say about the seats. They all looked pretty new, although it could have just been new material laid over the seats. The arm rests also looked new. I don't think Singapore Airlines use 3-4-3 on their 777, so that would most likely mean the seats are brand new. Both flights I upgraded to the extra leg room seats (not bulkhead though).
 
Seats are a complete new design (one big hint is the no headrest ;) ), just a tip if you would like to upgrade at the airport to Scootbiz, it's about $187OW...
 
I'm never overly keen about any LCC.
Must admit I'm a bit bemused this has got so much interest, the strong impression I get from my many hours of being on AFF is that most AFF members have difficulty traveling in Y let alone on a LCC and also a bit surprised that cabin crew who can get cheap flights on regular airlines would also fly.

Personally I think maybe we need to get a reality check, LLC's fill a need but if it's not for us how about just moving on rather than lording it over the poor people.

The comment was 'tongue in cheek" & for one - I am far from being a snob or not syncing any category of wealth to alignment of choice of carrier, whether LCC or not..

I also happen to fly on some LCC carriers within Asia & Australia.. For convenience sake or where there is little or no alternative..

Like many others on this forum, there would be some curiosity in a new airline such as Scoot, & being in close proximity to my hometown, & client base.. I am also interested to hear about flight reviews, whether good, bad or otherwise LCC or not. :D

Unfortunately our partner airline benefits are funny about 'partners', and as such would only let me fly on that ticket. General industry discounts were expensive considering we were only going to Singapore for 2 nights.
 
The Flight Test report in the SMH today has a review of Scoot. The reporter says they were told that the incessant bings of the call buttons was being caused by passengers accidently hitting them with their hips-apparently positioned in a low position :eek:
 
Yes. Why can't people sit with their hips 10 inches above the seat cushion....

What a fail for seat/button design if that is the case

I just had a quick Singaporean holiday thanks to Scoot's initial launch pricing. And yes, the buttons on the armrests are located in a way that your legs will bump them and cause the "bong" to go off. It is a seriously poor design given the seats are already narrow, and any in-seat movements have to be made carefully to avoid bumping the buttons.

Plus the cabin crew announcements were painful. Here is a pre take-off sample from the Sydney-Singapore leg (Not word for word, but you get the point): "Thank you for choosing Scoot, today we'll be leaving Sydney airport and flying to Kuala Lumpur" *Awkward silence* "Haha just joking, I was checking to see if you were paying attention!"

Cringeworthy stuff. I know they're trying to differentiate their product, but it wasn't even fun/cheerful...the whole thing was just lame (and I like lame humour when done right!).

But having said all that...at $350 return (And I got the bulkhead seats, with ample legroom), it was still good value. If all you need is a seat and don't expect much else, you'll be right.

Sounds like the old Virgin Blue days of 'If you are caught smoking in the toilets during the flight, you will be asked to leave the aircraft immediately.'
I hate forced humour as well.
 
Well, I was looking for a cheap fare SIN-SYD, but thanks to the above reports I won't be flying Scoot (and I thought Air Asia X was bad).

I wonder if SQ has purposely made Scoot bad just to emphase the difference?

Just got even cheaper.

Got an email for A$99 fares SYD-SIN and OOL-SIN.
Seems to be S$99 on the return if booked as one-ways
