Scams like these

This is one I got a few months ago! For the record, my name is not james, nor am I vet
 
When I was overseas last week, I received a call from a NZ number. I couldn't answer the phone. When I ringed the number back, it did not connect. So I thought it was a spam call or the call was unable to connect as I was overseas.

Then when I came to AU this week, I tried calling that NZ number and someone answered it. I introduced myself & explained that I had received a call from their number late last week & I was overseas blah blah blah ... they were surprised and told that they did not call me or anyone with my name ... So I wonder it was a spam call that was originated from a number which is not the spam callers' number? May be the spamming company was using someone else's' number to make a call ?

Also, one of the first things they asked me was where was I calling from - to which I replied "Australia" and the lady on the phone was like "yea, right ... you don't sound Australian?" May be she thought I was making a spam call (due to my Indian accent?) . I didn't continue the convo and ended saying "Don't worry about it, I was simply returning a call that I had missed, you have a good day"

Anyways, my motivation to return the call was - I'm on the hunt for my next gig and trying to see if I can work overseas for a year or so ... and I had applied for some roles in NZ.
 
It did get me momentarily as I cancelled a credit card a few weeks ago but the Italian gave it away, and the fact that it’s not actually addressed to me.F012F374-1A0D-4909-AD1A-218B64408A48.jpeg
