Scams like these

I was thinking it was real, apart from I don't know the company...and the embedded address in the link to the website is a Brazilian one :D

I had a scare last night which I'm hoping is now over. I clicked on a link in relo's FB page. Immediately a page popped up 'from' Windows up saying that all my data (banking/email/photos), was doomed as it was being stolen and that I had 5 mins to call what appeared to be a SYD number to stop it.

I did a Malwarebytes scan which showed nothing, but I could not get past the pop up. I couldn't click on any of the other pages I had open, nor my email and and could not log off. In the end I pulled the plug and tried not to worry. This morning, my banking etc seems to be fine. Never seen that before.
 
I've had similar on my iPhone clicking a link via FB App. Screen frozen. Closed and deleted FB App, then opened FB via web and all was well.

Re-loaded the FB App a couple of days later. Nothing changes/deleted, so just a scaremonger.

I had the call from the Computer Technical Dept today. "Am I speaking to the computer user?"
It must have been the silly way I strung out the "Ye...ss" response that started him giggling and he had to hang up. ;)
 
I had "the call" from Microsoft advising of problems with my computer. I said "I'm so glad that you called - I had a call from you guys yesterday and did everything they said - and now my computer doesn't work - can you please help me to get it going again". I bumbled around for about 15 min with the guy at the other end of the phone offering helpful suggestions, then I resorted to abuse - to which "the guy" responded with abuse as well. Well worth the 15 minutes of phone entertainment.
 
Odd one tonight... guess it still counts as a scam.

Received a PayPal email confirming a charge of $4000ish to Singapore airlines. Haven't booked anything with them.... thought it might be a dodgy email, but the charge has come off my MasterCard.

On hold with SQ now
 
Hope that you got it sorted (reversed) and hopefully you cancelled their flight - would love to think they'd turn up for the flight only to be told....:D ;)

They probably purchased the flights for some unsuspecting client.

I don't think we do enough to stop fraud. The scum bags get away with too much that is not theirs.

Slow progress. I lodged a dispute with PayPal and they take 10 days to get back to you.

I called SQ and they asked me to send them a screenshot of the PayPal charge. Haven't heard back yet.

If it drags on and gets too close to my credit card due date, I'll have to dispute it with the bank
 
I won't go into detail about sellers and buyers of crude oil who are not as they appear and issue false documents in an attempt of (huge) financial benefit. They waste a huge amount of time that you never get back. :( Thinking about forgetting about commodities and sticking with bulk product and infant formula.
 
Got this one today. I think it is a scam but it's plausible and could fool a lot of people. The subject line is "The Department of Human Services Secure Email" and the sender claims to be from a .gov.au email address for human services, very very close to the actual website for Human Services.

"You have received a secure email from the Department of Human Services.

Please select the link below to view the email.
Please note, you may have to register for this service"

The next bit of the email is a link which is very close to the human services website but has an extra domain of securemail in it. A strange version of my email address is part of the link.

The last line is "Please copy and paste the URL into your browser. If you encounter any issues, please close and reopen your browser before navigating to the URL again."

I have avoided as much as possible giving my email address to government departments which is why I suspect this is a scam. Unfortunately I had to create a mygov account which will eventually be linked to an NDIS account. I logged into the mygov account and the only "email" waiting for me was the introduction email from last year.

I've read some info on the Human Services website and it talks about some common scams but this is not listed. It says something about the fact that they won't send hyperlinks in the email so if this link is a hyperlink then I guess that makes it a scam.

I know I sound ignorant here but what is the difference between a link, a url and a hyperlink.

This is really creepy.

A link and a hyperlink are the same thing, really. A URL is the web address (e.g. www. scam .com) which is the embedded information of a link/hyperlink.

So, if the department says they won't send emails with links, it suggests its a scam. Some scammers are very clever and make their emails look very, very similiar to the real thing.

I would call customer service line and inquire about it. But don't ever click the links until you are 100% sure. That's my golden rule. Never click a link in any unknown email.

If ever in ANY DOUBT, even the slightest - NEVER click but revert to old technology,

instead ring the company/Govt Dept on your land line preferably.
