apologies if this has been answered elsewhere.... do you still earn SC if you don't actually fly?

A simple but definitive answer.

NO.
And the not-so-simple answer is "don't mention the b*s"
sorry NM, you've lost me there :(
The keyword here is fly. Up until a few years ago you could earn 10SCs with QFF travelling on a bus from PBO-TPR (Paraburdoo-Tom Price).

So no need to actually fly to earn SCs.

And please forgive JohnK for actually using the b*s word! :D  :p

John is correct in saying it relates to a b*s that could be caught in outback WA and SCs earned for the trip. The reason for using b*s (using the full word is a no-no ;)) is that (before my time here) a poster was booking b*s trips for meagre dollars and not actually taking the trips, yet still earning cheap SCs and status. QF became aware of this and there were repercussions with QF and also the poster in question had his/her posts deleted (at own request) and left the board, hence I can't point you to the full story (I would have loved to have read it myself)

If I've got anything fundamentally wrong there (quite possible) I would welcome a correction.

thanks for the explanation tuapekastar i've obviously got a lot to learn! (even though i have been to both paraburdoo and tom price!)

Umm then I won't mention the other non-flying way to earn SC. Not as cheap or easy as the b*s, but still available.

Likely involves a code share on some form of transport
From memory QF announced codeshares on some German train services. I could be wrong but I think you can earn SCs on these codeshares.

Hmm, I am sure I posted "don't mention the b*s" and everyone goes and mentions the b*s! All I can say is that the word "allegedly" should probably have appeared a few more times in this thread than it actually has ;).

Now, back to seeking a new avatar

Anyone know any more details about this? I'm actually in the process of planning a 4 day rail pass throughout Germany.

Just having a quick look at Qantas Route Map Stuttgart - Frankfurt is a train service but needs to be booked in conjunction with a Qantas Intl flight ...

Unfortunately, these services don't earn you SC's or points, but they certainly do have a QF "flight" number. Caught one from FRA to Koln last year - not a shabby way to travel.

I think that Koln, Stuttgart, Dusseldorf, and Bonn may be the possible destinations, but am happy to be corrected.

Maybe the guy who mentioned the unmentionable b*s should be sidelined for a week or two :!:
Really? Many of the newer members, and some of the older ones, would not have a clue that b*s actually refers to a bus.

I had no idea either!
I thought it might have been something to do with BAS statements, or the new Woolies BWS offer, or some news from BIS Shrapnel, or a discounted BOSE sound system.
I never thought it referred to a BUS, sorry! B*S (don't mention the war!)

But YMMV when it comes to the points that are actually credited once you take the journey

and Munich.

I was also wondering what the cheapest way to get some SC's? I have until 28 February 2010 to get 60 SC's to get me to QC Silver. It was a fluke I got this far, got upgraded to Business on my flight home from LAX last week and when I looked at my account, it told me only 60 to go!

Maybe planning a trip to NZ in Feb, what is the cheapest way to get the credits??

MEL-SYD-AKL (or whichever port you're going to) and the same coming back home.
