Ryanair passengers forced to lick ice cubes is bad, but ...

If you think things are bad now, be warned - air travel is only going to get worse, writes Charles Starmer-Smith

“Our customer service is unlike any other airline,” he said during a recent interview. “Will we give you a refund on a non-refundable ticket if your granny died unexpectedly? No. We're not interested in your sob stories.”

the British Government has got in on the act by raising Air Passenger Duty (APD) at a time when other European countries have abandoned their equivalent taxes. We have reached the ludicrous situation where by next year the average £365 return fare from London to Los Angeles will see passengers pay £319 in taxes and £46 for the fare.

No wonder then that in a survey of London's Daily Telegraph readers this week, more than half said that they have been put off travelling abroad during the festive period next year. Have we reached the nadir for air travel in the UK? Probably not. The Government plans to raise APD again next November. Happy Christmas.

I must admit when I first saw this story I thought "forced to lick ice blocks to stave off heat exhaustion" in Stansted in December?.
Then I realised it was Ryanair and I added it to my ever growing list of reasons never to fly with them.
Couldn't they just get some bottled water and for once actually look after their passengers :?:.

Tax of nearly 7x the ticket price is crazy. I guess it’d be lower on other routes and airlines, but what are they thinking?!

Try my latest purchase with LH, bought at most one week before departure.

LH 4767 LHR-MUC cls E (lowest bucket Economy)
LH 4766 MUC-LHR cls E

LH have an Australian site which allows payment in AUD (the forex implications turned out in the end to be minor).

Total fare cost for above itinerary: $183.90
Base fare: $10.00
Taxes & fees: $173.90

I can't remember how the taxes break down, but doing a dummy booking on LH and looking at the detail, the highest charge appears to be "Fuel and Security Surcharge" followed by the "Passenger Service Charge" for each airport.

Assuming all taxes and surcharges vanished tomorrow, that CRJ-900 carries 90 pax, at $10 a ticket they’ve got $900. If you add catering, IFE, FUEL and whatever else, how much money would they actually make.

Seems more like they’re actually making slightly more per sale than the $10 they claim to be.
