Well Ryanair's nickel and diming has finally got to me! We travel to ORK very regularly as that's where Mrs Flashback is from. We always go HLO. We usually take FR ex-LGW over EI ex-LHR, as EI is pretty pricey and then fly EI back as they tend to be cheaper than FR (go figure!). Departures out of LGW are slightly quicker/easier for us, but it's small in the larger scheme of things.

Now that you need to pay for priority boarding to take on a carry on bag (well, anything larger than a personal item, which is tiny) or pay to either check in your HLO bag or pay more for a full size suitcase, the difference on the return trip is only £28 per passenger return. Given on EI we can choose our seats for free during OLCI (and have always ended up with a decent seat in doing so) I consider the extra spend to be well worth it.

With us both being BA Gold card holders, we get to use the EI lounge on either side. That being said, I did always like using Priority Pass @ LGW to use the Grain Store restaurant, so I will miss that. Looking forward to checking out the EI lounge at T2 as I've never flown out of T2, only into it.

Has anyone else that has previously (happily) used Ryanair now gone down a similar path and switched alliances?

@Flashback Maybe (route) "Allegiances" rather than "Alliances".

Those fees are getting ridiculous.

Good shout! And yes, they are indeed. All in the guise of allowing flights to depart on time. I still reckon it makes not one iota of difference.

I've long been a staunch supporter of Ryanair as they suit a purpose and fill it well, but with the latest baggage changes then I'm sorry but no longer. I think I've only ever once done a weekend trip with a backpack and even though that was small, it's still larger than the new 'personal item' size. Pffft!
