Hi folks,

I'm just wondering is anyone here knows how they decide which flights use what runways at SYD airport?

I fly with DJ all the time to and from BNE, and it always seems to be the far runway with the longest taxi. Who gets to use the nearer runways? Is there some sort of pecking order?

Cheers

its partly dictated on direction of travel, plus runway/taxi requirements.

ie. size of aircraft, planned destination.

It seems the short haul mostly uses the "third" runway, and long haul + tiddlers use the "main" runway, with the "east-west" only in use when wind dictates.

Yes, you get on the flight to bne/mel etc and it seems like you're driving there it takes so long.....

Not quite.. You will see some int flights arriving from the east using the third runway. I've seen plenty of Air NZ operate off it. Like wise, quite often my MEL flight uses the main runway when departing to the south, but the third runway when departing to the north. Direction of travel plays into it as you don't want aircraft crossing over one another too close to the airport.

I'd have a guess that the size of the plane.

Never seen a 747/A380 operate off 34R / 16L or Runway 07/25 - Size, Weight, Noise would also be a factor

Hence why I said mostly, not always.

I'd say the OP gets the point by now in any event.

Size is not the issue, TODA is, and I have seen plenty of heavies depart from 07/25 when I was in the tower.

Yes, back in the late 90's we had a disabled aircraft stuck on 16 R forcing the runway to be closed. All traffic landed on 16 L, including 747's, with no issues.

Could that have been an Ansett 747 with a retracted nose gear, perhaps?

With near-empty tanks they'd be quite happy to land there - but try to depart for LAX from 16L and you'd be in competition with EK407 for skidmarks and would probably end up with wet feet too.

I have landed on an A380 (ex HKG) from the Easterly direction before, was quite surprised. No idea on runway numbers, sorry!
