I bolded the bit that says EVEN after the line out has ended. The guy has to retire, not play at the ball.

The wording of 11.7 is also interesting, it doesn't explicitly state the off side player has to still be offside when "next playing the ball". In fact I would suggest that the wording of 11.7 implies that they must be back onside when they are "next playing the ball". Why would they have another rule saying an off side player can't play the ball?
IMO the implication of 11.7 is about when the offside player next plays the ball when onside. If we accept the hypothesis that Phipps intentionally played the ball (I don't accept that). Then the player offside at the knock on, has still "next played the ball" to prevent the opposition gaining an advantage from the knock on. Where is the advantage in phipps wildly throwing his arms around?

Having watched the ball hit Phipps a few times today, IMO it hit his chest and bounced off. No control if he did hit it with his hand. No intention.

But there was no ruck, maul, scrum or lineout as the lineout had ended. And Phipps puts him onside by intentionally batting the ball backwards.

As it was, if you read my original post again, I do think that at full speed and at first glance, the call was correct. Multiple slow mo angles shows that it wasn't, but the referee only gets one go at it.

But he's not put offside by the lineout, but by the fact that his team-mate touches the ball.

Agree with your interpretation. Yes I wonder how many times World Rugby reviewed the decision in slow motion before hanging Joubert out to dry.

It'll be a great game tonight. But the people of Mynyddcerrig in Wales are clearly supporting the man in the middle.

Go well Nigel!

Enough times to make a decision on it clearly, it's two weeks ago now, you guys really need to get over it.

infinity is at the game tonight! Lucky bxx_xxr!

Wow. Nigel Owens having a shocker. 3 or 4 terrible mistakes and all 50-50 calls going there way. The marvels of Pocock and Hooper keeping it from a flood.

Owens really really doesn't like Stephen Moore.

Makes me wonder why Anglo private school boys plus a few Pacific Islanders think this is a real Australian side.

Nigel Owens doesn't have shockers.

He certainly did tonight. At least 2 blatantly wrong calls. Forward pass and knock on that killed any wallaby momentum. The first try came shortly after the forward pass.

First decision was just a penalty for dumping someone on their head. Thankfully sanity prevailed and the yellow card came out. Then there was Richie laying all over the ground playing the ball and getting a turn over. It says something about the all blacks that they're happy to win from such blatant infringement.

Still overall the right team one. Wallabies were always going to struggle. Just for once it would be good if their chance to win wasn't impaired by shocking refereeing.

Who are you calling a private school boy!?

No excuses, as both Oz captain and coach declared. Except for time NZ fullback was sin-binned (more like 13 min. passage) the play was dominated by the All Blacks, deservedly the world champions

Here is a salutary lesson in being disrespectful at the wrong time. Clive Woodward when he coached the Lions , tried to defuse the All Blacks by refusing to use their name , they went on to be smacked 3 nil. It didn't work then, it didn't work this week either.

Wallabies had their 20 minutes but ABs deserved winners. Shame to see the AB superstars retire from international rugby but it's got to improve the Wallaby odds in the Bledisloe

...all things being equal, I doubt it. As Phil Kearns and John Eales in commentary were saying, the AB culture will keep them ahead.
