A good topic in today's Gazette, Round The World tickets, but perhaps not so much of interest to most FFs out there or there probably would be a Discussion Group devoted to it.

I am not a FF in the accepted sense although over time I have covered a great many miles, mainly international, for self rather than business. I hold about half a million Qantas FF points in Bronze Class almost all accumulated from credit cards.

I am looking to put together a RTW ticket for possibly next year, not necessarily using FF points but if that is possible, easily, that would be good. For what you can get, a RTW paid-for ticket is really very good value. Because, by definition, there are short travels components involved, I don't need better than Economy. But I do want to retain flexibility to change dates.

Recently I have been through the frustrating exercise of trying to design a RTW schedule of 16 stops using Qantas's OneWorld online facility. Would a travel agent, or Qantas, be able to put together something that makes more sense?

I want to go to India, spend at least a month there, and then I need to get to Europe via Mauritius. This is all heading west. BA flies out of Mauritius once a week direct, which is fine, or I think more often via Jo'berg. The schedule seems to require me to fly to Jo'berg from India via HK!

Then, I thought, if I am in southern Africa, why can't I go to London via places I haven't been before like the Middle East and perhaps Tunis. After all, isn't this the purpose of a RTW ticket. But it seems to be just too hard.

As of now, I have given up in frustration. Any advice would be welcome.

Hi Bill,

I am thinking of the same thing, can,t offer any advice:oops: but will watch this thread with interest:shock:

Regards Gary.

I'm by no means an expert on this, I just follow with great interest what others write.

One basic limitation of a oneworld RTW is the airline partners involved. This is what makes it hard to get many options for asia to middle east for example. The mid east partner is only Royal Jordan, so you are stuck to whatever routes they fly from asia (if any). And you're most likely going to have to fly via damascus. Same with getting from india to southern africa - the one world partners are cathy and BA. But this may change now that an indian airline is joining one world

Africa is hard on a OW RTW ticket. You may have seen their route map-
oneworld Online Timetable.
Unfortunately when Kingfisher joins it will not help as they have no African ports at this time-basically more choice in ways getting to India plus more destinations in India.

OK, thanks. So, Africa/Mauritius is the difficulty? I suppose I could do an "overland" leg from India to Mauritius and then to London, or a return trip from India to Mauritius. The latter alternative may allow me to go to, say, Amman and Tunis on the way to Europe from India on the RTW ticket.

Anyone with experience of value trips India/Mauritius?

I need to go to Mauritius for family history reasons.

The Oneworld (RTW) award offered by Qantas is slightly limited and may not be suited to what you require.

Some limitations are that it is restricted to 16 sectors, 5 stopovers and less than 35,000 miles. It becomes a Oneworld award when you use Qantas + 2 other Oneworld carriers. You can only stopover in the one city twice and transit in the same city once as well. It costs 140,000 QFF points if booking online + 2,500 QFF booking fee if doing over the phone. Before beginning the trip you can make changes to the routing for a change fee of 5,000 QFF points (I think) each time subject to availability.

Note that this is not strictly a RTW award so you can have 2 of these (one following the other) going at the same time. Something like SYD-LHR and then LHR-SYD with 5 stopovers each and limited to 35,000 miles. Unfortunately Oneworld does not service Africa or South America as well as some other alliances.

The other option is to book 1 Oneworld award to get to key stopovers and from there use additional QFF points to get to other destinations. This option may be cheaper than booking 2 Oneworld awards. eg get to LHR and from there go to Cairo, Tel Aviv, Dubai etc. In the USA one-way flights are fairly cheap in terms of QFF points and taxes. Be creative.

When I have planned both my Oneworld awards I loved playing around with the booking engine to see it's limitations and I now know it quite well. With all of these type of bookings planning is half the fun. Very soon I will be ready to book my 3rd Oneworld award and looking forward to it.
