I've just booked a RTW oneworld J class ticket directly with Qantas, and been quoted $10200 (includes taxes and additional surcharges). Has anyone been successful in obtaining cheaper fares (oneworld carriers) through other means?

There's lots of different types of RTW tickets. Care to elaborate (perhaps incl itin)?

Yes, people have. One way is to use the fact that the fares vary depending upon country of origin; the cheapest near Oz is Sri Lanka. The cost of a DONE4 from CMB is about AUD$6,450 (LKR498,200) + tax. (The same fare puchased from QANTAS in Oz is AUD$9,539 + tax.)

One issue with this is you need to travel to the port of destination to commence you journey.

There is a lot more information in this "The oneworld explorer ticket FAQs" thread wich is found on the FlyerTalk oneWORLD Forum.

Thanks. I'll check the FlyerTalk post. The itinerary is: SYD-HKG-Rome-Valencia//Barcelona-Copenhagen-JFK-EZE (Buenos Aires)-Santiago de Chile-SYD.

Based on that routing and the price mentioned, I assume you are on a OneWorld Global Explorer fare, known as DGLOB34. That fare permits up to 34,000 miles travel (max 20 sectors) for A$9539 plus taxes (list price).

The OneWorld Explorer fare is based on the number of continents touched and your routing would require a DONE5 (5 continents) fare for $10,509 plus taxes. But a DONE5 can include significantly more than 34,000 miles, but still only 20 sectors.

NM, you're spot on. I've booked a ticket, and am sending out my itinerary to Flightcentre and to a family friend to see if they can beat it. Now all I need to do is work out the number of points and SCs...

I spoke to my usual booking agent at FC the other day and she was able to do better by a few hundred.

Discounts on multi-airline fares such as DGLOB34 are often based on the mileage proportion allocated to each of the airlines. Our corporate discount is higher for QF component than it is for AA, BA, CX etc. The discount is a percentage reduction in the fare component for each of the carriers. The total fare price is divided by the proportion of miles on each carrier, and then each carrier's percentage discount is applied to their portion of the fare.

This means that we get a bigger discount if there is more miles flown on QF flight numbers (including codeshares). In fact, I once worked out that my total fare would be about $100 lower if I changed the final leg of my DONE4 from MEL-BNE to MEL-PER-SYD-ADL-BNE - not to mention the extra SC's. But alas I was more concerned with getting home than wasting my time in a severely jet-lagged state to save a hundred bucks (even though it was my money that was being saved).

The TA's like FC may have a very different way of applying discounts, but it may be based on a similar carrier proportion basis - ie they may get more commission for QF component vs AA, BA etc. So it may be worth asking if there is anything you can do with your itinerary that may affect the discount they will offer. Your TA may not be willing to tell you how they work it out and may not be willing to invest the time into calculating the options. But it may be worth asking.
