Seriously,delays happen. Is the airline meant to operate an aircraft purely for them? Or kick off other passengers on other flights?

Everyone needs some 'padding' in thier schedule, unless you have a private jet.

Imagine the PR nightmare if the plane crashed with 147 people on board and add a royal as well and it will be a PR disaster.

Can't win for Qantas here. Don't take off - delay the royals. Reassign another pax aircraft for the royals - planeload of annoyed pax. Take off despite problems... if you make it, no thanks except you broke safety protocol; if you don't, Qantas will be held for murder.

The only way to come out of this cleanly was the original aircraft to be perfectly ready to go.
