I am considering Royal Brunei business class for an upcoming trip, with some great fares out of Melbourne. Curious though about the dress code, I found some online reviews that said a no-jeans rule is enforced ( Royal Brunei Airlines - Comparing Business Class & Economy ). My most formal business outfit is neat jeans, dress shoes and nice belt, business shirt, and a sport coat/jacket. I don't actually own any suits or dress pants (that fit) and it's not necessary for my job (tech sales engineer). I guess I could afford to get something "fancier" for the savings of these cheap fares, but it seems a bit silly - especially for flights to and from Australia. Does anyone know if this is really enforced? If I refuse to go to an airport shop and buy some dress pants (which are unlikely to be available in my size in Melbourne airport), will they actually refuse to check me in and/or downgrade me to economy? Curious how this plays out.

Note - I asked a colleague from Brunei and he confirmed that although people dress modestly there, jeans are considered totally acceptable and worn frequently by men in business casual situations, so he found the rule strange too. Certainly the rule against shorts makes sense.

Edit: I am aware of the ban on alcohol on these flights and in Brunei, this is not an issue for us.

I would suggest to you that believing something written by an influencer/blogger, especially something that appears to have been written a while ago, may be the issue.

If you can find something official on the Royal Brunei site then maybe you should worry. I’m betting you won’t.

Wow, not sure why the disdain, there's a huge amount of information on the Internet from sources of varied credentials, and that link appears to be an authentic travel review site, while they could have made this up I don't see their motivation to? I agree it's from a couple of years ago, but not ancient, hence why I was asking here for recent comments. Have you flown them in J or are you just coming here to throw shade at my question.

Fair point, I didn't find anything, so maybe it is no longer a policy.

There was something easily found referring to dress code ... but this was in relation to industry travel, which is not unusual.

I can find another blog which also mentions the dress code. The departure point was also LHR so that may be the deciding factor. Like you I could see nothing on the Royal Brunei Site. We flew Royal Brunei Business class Singapore/Brunei/Singapore in 2019. Nobody took any notice of what I wore - which was Chinos and casual joggers. When we were in Bandar Seri Begawan I was cautious about wearing shorts but it only seemed to really apply if you visited a mosque. My wife's male and female relatives, who were born there, often wore jeans when were out and about with them.

Have done half a dozen trips from Australia to Asia and back with them and never had an issue in J. Mostly have worn comfortable pants but have also worn shorts with no issue. Have seen plenty of other J pax wearing shorts, jeans and pretty much anything

I wonder if ‘no jeans and sneakers’ is for staff/industry/agent discounted tickets? Dress codes aren’t uncommon for staff travel, which the writer clearly was.

I emailed RB in Japan and Australia and I can confirm categorically that they DO NOT have a dress code for business as class.
