Routed via Alice Springs?

Can anyone explain for me what these two entries from the QF arrivals list for Cairns today mean?

#1, the flight landed at CNS from ASP at 18:33, some 93 minutes later than scheduled.

Sounds like the flight departed ASP and then returned shortly later, possibly with some sort of mechanical or medical reason.

Just a quick question about this. Does a departure in this case means take off and land again, or would simply leaving the gate, taxiing around the airport and returning to the gate be sufficient?

Hey oz_mark,

Qantas states that a flight has "departed" after it is pushed back from Gate (you would think it would change to "depart" as the aircraft rotates). Sometimes in JFK, QF108 may push back on time, but around 40mins later you are hearing take-off clearance (so while it says departed at 12.00, it still may be waiting for departure at 12.40pm etc).

So the 717-200 flying ASP-CNS may have pushed back, encountered some sort of problem and returned to gate. On the other hand it may have departed, flown for a few mins (or longer), and then had to return.

Yup. Some airports are notorious for lengthy delays on take-off. LHR (and to lesser extent FRA) springs to mind. I've had shorthaul flights from LHR where more time spent taxiing than flying.

Sometimes QF a bit cheeky with their on-time recording. I've had flights that push back from the gate a metre then stop waiting for bags to be loaded. QF then can say flight left on time! I've also had the reverse happen. On time arrival being recorded as aircraft pulls in to remote stand. Then wait an age for stairs and/or bus.
