General question - I'm wanting to book a round the world trip in October and baulked at the price of nearly $6k to go brisbane-dubai-berlin-barcelona-newyork-miami-rio-santiago-brisbane. Is this a ballpark figure or am I being taken well and truly for a ride? It seems i might be better off booking individual segments. Im stopping off in germany (1 week), vienna (1 week), barcelona (1 week), new york (5 days), rio (1 week), santiago (1 week).

Any ideas appreciated.

Boom the same thing on Star Alliance and it will be $2500

Lufthansa have a fare starting from just over $2k going Aust-South America-Europe-North America-Aust (and can avoid the middle east completely :) ) 1 piece luggage included up to 23kg

You don't mention cabin, but from the price I will assume economy.

Buy a one way to JNB (CX is likely cheaper unless you have points for an award ticket) and get a LONE5 from there.
JNB-DOH(or LHR)-berlin-barcelona-newyork-miami-rio-santiago-SYD-brisbane-(SYD-JNB) The last being required on the ticket but not necessarily flown. And it would appear that a trip within AUS/NZ (or Europe/USA) could be added to make up the 16 allowed segments.

Showing just over USD$2100 plus taxes and fees at the moment. Far more details on the flyertalk one world pages.

Happy wandering

Fred

Which website were you using to calculate this or was in through a travel agent?

I'd consider paying sector airfares for a few of the flights within Europe, USA & South America then price the major longhaul flights on the one ticket. There as so many different ways you could construct a fare and sometimes just removing one flight and paying for it separately could make thousands of dollars difference to the cost of a ticket.

Example one

International ticket: BNE/xDXB/TXL - BCN/JFK - MIA/RIO - SCL/xSYD/BNE

Separate tickets: TXL/BCN, JFK/MIA, RIO/SCL

Example two

International ticket: BNE/xDXB/TXL - BCN/JFK/xLAX/BNE

Separate ticket: JFK/MIA, MIA/RIO, RIO/SCL, SCL/JFK

The second example above is essentially half a return fare via the EH BNE to TXL with a DXB transit with an open jaw turnaround point ie flying into TXL & out of BCN. The return fare component is half the BNE/BCN fare via the AP with a stopover in JFK and transit in LAX. On the separate tickets from the USA to South America you may even be able to have less fare components if you could find an airfare JFK/RIO which allows a stopover in MIA and RIO/JFK which allows a stop in SCL.

There's endless possibilities really.

I take it it's a paid fare or would you be open to using frequent flyer points for any of the travel? You could always join the Alaska Airlines mileage program & buy points and redeem on CX JFK/HKG/BNE to come home.

Is it self funded or does your company have a budget for your trip?

Thankyou for all comments thus far. It's a self funded ticket for a personal holiday and I never mind paying as it's a treat. I've booked and paid separate tickets before in the past when travel intra-state in the US with AA. I'll explore the option of dummy fares for separate tickets as mentioned. The website for that Lufthansa deal was on roundabouttravel.com.au I'm happy to do sector airfares for europe/or eurorail pass. I'm also looking into joining up with a few new credit card providers for points etc but a few grand for air fares I think is a great deal for me anyhow. It's economy all the way to minimise costs / airbnb / spending money I'm still looking at about $20k for 6 weeks which should be ample.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.
