hi, this is my first post here, so forgive me if this question has been asked before.

im looking to do a RTW flight next year around June and ideally im hoping to fly:

SYD --> Europe (london) --> US (new york) --> south america (??) --> Syd.

Those would be my main ports and then travel within those continents. Is that feasible as part of a round the world ticket? I've read stuff about havign to travel in the same direction etc but are there exceptions. Or would I have to change the route order.

i had a look around the site and various travel sites but couldnt really find the answer so if anyone can help it would be much appreciated.

Yes, its possible... but expensive...
Form ONE World (Qantas, BA, Cathay, American, LAN, Iberia etc...) you have the oneworld explorers and global explorers....

As a oneworld explorer you would be looking at an xONE5 (x being A for first, D for business, L for economy) and 5 for 5 continents.
(5 because thought Asia to Europe is a continent)
And you can fly upto 16 flights for the set cost with only the taxes being different.

Check this out...
oneworld - Air Travel Options

Look for lots of threads here about DONE4 / DONE5 etc.

Star Alliance also as the same sort of tickets but i do not know them well.

That is actually not a bad route as there are direct flights from South Am to SYD although you would need to be careful in terms of availability due to the limited number of flights.

Check out the oneworld - Home site and fine the oneworld planner tool and you can see how the flights might work and get a costing.

*A tickets are based on the number of miles in the itinerary. The *A website can fill you in on the details. Bear in mind that there is no longer a *A carrier in South America (unless TAM comes into the fold soon, and we all hope they do). Returning from South America means going via IAD, ORD or YYZ on the way home east-bound, or a European port west-bound. EZE-IAD-SFO-SYD or SCL-YYZ-YVR-SYD is a long, long way, especially if you do it in one hit!

Welcome to AFF, rendog122!!

Once you check the rules in some detail you'll have a better idea whether a xONE5 suits you. You can try this OWE itinerary validator here - quite accurate and v. useful for planning/checking things out.

And if you find yourself a flight or two short in one or more continents you may be able to just add a cheap sidetrip or two on LCCs.

Happy planning.

thanks for all of your help,

it seems to take a fair while to get my head around all this sort of stuff.

ive heard reports that its cheaper sometimes to begin your round the world trip from another country eg indonesia or nz?

Thats correct rendog.

Australia is quite cheap for Economy tickets, but on the expensive end globally for Business and First.
