Roomba, Dysons, Thermomix and other household appliances

Re: The totally off-topic thread

Can we rename this thread to the vacuuming appreciation thread?

And drron and I won't be participating as we know where the vacuum cleaner is stored but dare not go in there. Actually I know exactly where mine is located. It has my small luggage sitting on top of the box as I do not have any chairs in this apartment.

Reminds me I may need to do a quick mop soon. Can't remember the last time I did one.

Re: The totally off-topic thread

If I had to fit out a new kitchen with new appliances, I'd probably grab a thermomix so I save on getting a whole bunch of new things. Of course, I'd need to have a large budget in mind.

Most of us already have the components of a thermomix lying around, making it less of an incentive to get one out of sheer "I don't have what it can't do". The main thing that a thermomix can do that most of us don't already have is cooking and mixing things at a fixed temperature.

Yes - I came to that conclusion too. Great for a very new household. I have attended a demo where they popped whole strawberries in. No need to remove the green. But I could taste it. The soup they also made was rather wonderful but not worth it for that. I think with babies it might be good.

What recipe do you use babies for?

Re: The totally off-topic thread

Love my dyson but I end up emptying it way too much with all the cat hair. Cleaner does a better job and the vacuum just comes out occasionally.

To stop tracking of cat litter I use crystals, and put a little soft mat (might be an old fleece blanket) down about 30cm past the trays. This way the cats can "wipe" their feet on it. No more crystals anywhere else, it works really well.

With a price tag of ~$1800 that is the opportunity cost of a lot of flying for a retiree. I'll cope quite well with my bits and pieces, rather than buy a thermomix.

Re: The totally off-topic thread

I think so too - until the day I get a KitchenAid.

Thermomix? I think you either love 'em or just scratch your head wondering why? I scratch.

I've eyed off the Thermomix a few times but I already have a good mixmaster, food processor etc, and just havent seen the need for it. I can understand if you have a large family how it would come in handy cooking meals while you do other stuff. The kitchenaid is nice too but my mixmaster does a good enough job.

What I do love is my new Philips pasta maker. Fresh pasta from start to finish in 10 minutes, no effort.

My cat is a champion cat litter scatterer....we get a shower of litter in a 1 metre radius around the tray....

Ah. Something to check out then.
My cat spreads his dry cat food. In the end we bought this huge dip platter with the dip bowl in the middle and space for the corn chips around in. He puts his paws in the area for the corn chips and rummages away. No more splatter.

However he refuses to use kitty litter. We put down paper - flat butchers paper, and he uses that. Apparently ragdolls dont like litter.

You'd put the baby in the thermomix?

I have never heard of thermomix until today. What a sheltered life I've had. I have never owned a blender. May need one soon. Think I can survive without a thermomix.

Ah. Something to check out then.

I managed to get a good deal; sale at DJs, 10% off a DJs voucher and a $30 cash back offer. But it makes spag, linguine, rigatoni and lasagne. Can also make noodles and dumpling skins. I like knowing there is nothing hidden in my pasta, just flour, egg, oil, water and salt.

They got one for Government house and probably one for the lodge.

I have a cleaning lady.

She's no Dyson, although has magically turned into 3 ladies and a dude who clean my chateaux. I do like that there is 4 of them, because they clean faster, but it is rather exxy. Time to move to a hotel I think.

Re: The totally off-topic thread

I dont like seeing food wasted but on the other hand, why should I have to eat all of what someone else thinks is an appropriate sized meal for me?

Re: The totally off-topic thread

Moved these on topic posts, lest they taint another thread too much.

SWMBO purchased a dyson a couple of years ago - I still can't beleve she spent well over a grand on it - but she's happy.

We also have a Thermomix - all I can say is that at least we get use from the Dyson. (She does use the former occasionally but I reckon it's an expensive gimmick producing not much notable.)

One relatively recent purchase is a Phillips Airfryer - works great if you can run it under a robust exhaust fan. It has basically replaced our grill. It cooks bacon fine, does many things really well such as Chips, Chicken Pieces, even shaslicks.

Re: The totally off-topic thread

We have a Miele. Seems an ok vacuum cleaner but the "tube" has a habit of twisting. Hard to get excited about (unlike the dishwasher and washing machines which are just amazing).

Used to have a Roomba but when we moved to a place with wooden floors it had a habit of pushing the furniture around. We'd come home and find all the chairs in the corner of the room.

Re: The totally off-topic thread

My wife hates our Dyson (DC21 model) with so much passion that I could never buy one again (of course she doesn't actually vacuum herself, mind). It's really the motorised head that is the problem - oh replaced of course at a cost of $130, but clearly still loses suction compared to the excellent suck of the non-accessorised wand itself. Sure, you can send it to Caringbah NSW for assessment and fix if required, and they will courier it back to you for $85, but after two heads I figure it's just the way it is. Better to use a standard head fitting without all the fancy motorised rubbish, of course it's harder and it doesn't roll as well, but you get a good workout at least.
