Hi all!

My brother and I are heading to Europe for 3 weeks in July. I've just finished booking all our transport (finally..phew). Trains and planes are a go! I've also booked hotels in Frankfurt, Paris, Brussels and London. Which leaves Berlin and Rome...Berlin is easy enough for me to figure out. Rome on the other hand...well it's got me really confused. It certainly seems like a very expensive city to stay in.

Having a 3 year age gap between us has its benefits - particularly when our 18th and 21st birthdays fall in the same year...if you get my drift :). If you don't...well, Dad is picking up the tab for some things - one of them being hotels. I've found some excellent deals, and managed to average around $140AU per night, about half with breakfast - 4.5* or above. Berlin will come in at or below that. I know that we are very unlikely to get anywhere close to the average for a decent place in Rome - considering how low I've kept every other cost through the tricks I've learned here and on FT, splurging a bit shouldn't be an issue.

We will be checking in 13 July, checking out 16 July. I have found Suite Dreams - Accoglienti e moderne Suite nel centro di Roma which seems like a decent enough option - but I am not too sure on where it is located in the city, i.e. if it is a dodgy area or not. EUR390 for 3 nights.

The real high class establishments seem very pricey, however I admit the Waldorf caught my eye, as I am gold in hhonors. I understand this is a fair way out of the city as well, but it does look like an amazing property. Looking at about EUR600 if that is the option we take, which is still a fair bit cheaper than other higher-end options in Rome such as the IC.

Any advice...please throw it my way! As always I am greatly appreciative!

I'm in Rome from the 8th to 13th July and staying at the Althea Inn which is rated highly on Tripadvisor. 90 Euro/night.

Certainly is highly rated. I hadn't really considered the option of a B&B type place as we prefer staying in a big hotel. Seems it might be something worth investigating though.

I stay at the Regno ( via Del Corso) right in Rome, 5 mins walk from the Trevi. About 160 Euro per night.
Worth the extra to be right in town. 3 star

Last time in Rome we stayed in the Vatican area. Had a great time & as keen walkers we were able to cover a big area of sights very easily

We stayed at the Una Hotel, last year, with our two twenty something sons and all liked it a lot.
UNA Hotels - 4 star Hotels in Italy: Rome, Florence, Milan, Venice, Neaples, Bari, Bergamo, Biella, Bologna, Brescia, Catania, Lodi, Siracusa, Versilia, Tuscany, Sicily

Its quite near to the Termine train and bus station so it's easy to get around although we walked to most of the main tourist attractions. The hotel does a great breakfast and the rooms we had were modern and big by European standards. Some people advise against hotels near Termine but we didn't see any signs of trouble.

The Trastevere area is worth a visit at night, there's lots of restaurants and bars there and it's popular with young people. Take the bus from Termine.

Regards
David

Can't remember where I stayed but that doesn't matter - wouldn't recommend it anyway (in the middle of nowhere).

Without starting a debate, I'd suggest free breakfasts are good, but apart from that I wouldn't worry about booking fancy hotels. Save your money for shopping/tours etc. You shouldn't be in the hotel enough to audit their star rating.

Thank you all for your magnificent advice and recommendations! :)

After much investigation and perusal of what has been said in this thread and others like it on AFF, I've booked the NH Giustiniano, which is on the Vatican side of Rome. It only set us back $176/night with breakfast, which, while more than the average I've achieved thus far, seems excellent for the time of year in Rome.

Thanks again :)
