Hi guys,
Me and gf are going to Hong Kong, wondering if you seasoned travelers can point me to a romantic resturant that overlooks the river so we can watch the light show also.

Felix is a great choice.... been many times.

Another discovery of mine is this place [ azure ] I have not been in about 18 months. great food drinks and atmosphere.

Pearl on the Peak - get a corner table overlooking Victoria Harbour.

Can be a little coughbersome to get up the Peak and back but it's worth it. Fantastic food, service and views.

+1 one for Pearl. (It's best on a clear day/evening.)

SWMBO and I had a great meal there.

Another vote for Felix.

Last time I was there back in April I we were a little confused by the seats on the main floor which had the photo of somebody printed on to the back of them (there were 5 or 6 different ones). My friends, who were locals, didn't recognise them so we ended up asking the manager who they were. Turns out they were all members of staff who had worked there for 20+ years each - kinda nice way to recognise your longest serving staff.

My pick would be Aqua Restaurant on the top floor of 1 Peking Road, TST.

Aqua Restaurant Group ? Hong Kong, Beijing, London

Beautiful couple booths along the double storey curved glass window with fantastic view of the harbour and HK Island. Menu has a mix of Italian (Roma) & Japanese (Tokyo). There is also a funky bar upstairs (Spirit) which you can move up to after dinner.

Cheers
Mark

I second this recommendation - Hutong offers a great setting, great views, great food, etc, etc.....check out the website.

I can also recommend the Aqua Luna junk harbour cruise - go in the evening to see the light show.

If you want to mix it up a little, China Club is a good choice - old world charm, no views, show with dinner - not really romantic but I'm assuming that you will be in HK for more than one night - if not go with Hutong.

+1 for Hutong, make sure you are there for the Sound and light show and ask for a window seat, great view. Very atmospheric and food is great.

Hutong and Acqua are great restaurants, and afford fantastic views of the Harbour and the Island. Peking Road is also conveniently located to the Star Ferry terminal and also the Tsim Sha Tsui MTR station.

The China Club is definitely worth checking out at another time. David Tsang's design evokes 1930's Shanghai and the food is excellent. The catch is that you have to be invited it by a member, though you may be able to wrangle a table through the concierge at your hotel.

Caprice in the Four Seasons is a very posh restaurant with views of the Harbour, on the Island, so you won't see the light show. It's certainly worth a visit if you like French food, though I thought the food was a little fussy for my liking.

Spoon by Alain Ducaisse is also on Kowloon, and I think the restaurant has a view as well. Of all the big name international restauranteurs who have opened up in HK, I think this is one of the weakest. The food is fussy, and not great value.

Have to be honest here and say that I find the light show pretty mediocre, and wouldn't select my dinner location based on watching it.

However, if you want a ahrbour view, has to be Hutong.

I'd also recommend Cafe Gray Deluxe at the Upper House by Gray Kunz. We had Christmas dinner there last year. Very stylish place with awesome food and service. The views aren't as nice as the other places here mentioned but if you get the right table you will have views of Victoria Harbour.

That's how we managed to get in - the place was packed and pumping. Great night.

Honestly I havent been to hong kong before, so I dont know what to do there. But my mrs is having her bday over there, so I thought a nice romantic dinner overlooking the city/light show might be good. I thought of her and I on a boat just us 2 sailing for 3 hours with a crew but that costs $1500 for the 3 hours.

Alternative suggestion could be to take a (shared) boat trip to Lantau and then have dinner at one of the waterfront seafood restaurants. Very popular HK activity.

Are there any types of food you really enjoy?

I agree the sound and light show is not especially impressive. Interestingly, we were surveyed leaving HKIA by a tourist bureau staff member. She said our response was not unusual. Didn't eat anywhere fancy-lots of well priced options. Would stay away from the Jumbo floating seafood restaurant and the one next to it owned by the same company. Poor quality and low value.

oh and I forgot, she is vegetarian
Ah. How strict? - in terms of eating in a restaurant that uses utensils that may have contacted with meat in the past eg a wok.

There are some great vegetarian restaurants in HK. First, every good Cantonese restaurant will have a page of vegetarian because there are a large chunk of Chinese Buddhists. So any top Cantonese will have you covered - so Tin Lung Heen, T'ang Court downwards. This will be expensive but not scarily so.

Then you go for specialist vego - eg M Garden, in Mongkok. They do vegetarian versions of most cantonese dishes - even pig - and it is very clever. I'm not a big fan of this kind of fakery but it's done really well. There's also a stack of South Indian scattered through HK for meals on the go.

Then you're into the monasteries - Lantau (big buddha place) is very well regarded but a little commercialised. On Diamond Hill there's a nunnery called Chi Lin and it has beautiful gardens and a vegetarian restaurant.

She isnt that strict, thank god. She will still will eat if meat has touched the pan, she just wont eat the meat.
