Can some one post a piccie and a where-to-buy for these roll-aboards...

I looked today (keeping in mind i was looking in HBA!) and no-one had any idea what i was talking about. So a picture or some other idea of what it looks like would be great.

Here's your basic info from QF, including dimensions: Most fit within these dimensions and can be expanded to an additional 60cm for additional capacity (of course if using this facility they would need to be checked).

If they fit in the test frames, they should fit (wheels in) to most QF B744s and A330s OHSBs.

Here's an image of one from "the frequent Flyer Collection" for you to get an idea.

(I would not buy one of these as I think you can get a better price for similar elsewhere)

A-ha... thanks for that.

Any ideas on what brands are the best for durability and cost-effectiveness?

This is the one I use (Antler Eliptiq 46cm)which complies with the Qantas Domestic size requirements. I specifically chose this one because of it's (light) weight and it conformance to the domestic size requirements despite most of my travel now being international as I often need to travel via SYD for International connections.

BTW - I bought mine from Luggage Direct - quick service and no postage (at the time), although they have raised it to $10 for MEL ($15 for TAS)

Cost effective I can't help you with. I recently got an addiction to Tumi luggage - top end simple durable luggage. The basic 20in rollaboard (fits end on in an A330) retails around $800 (tax deductible though ;)) - I also have the trifold suit bag. All of it is much cheaper if bought in the US.

Go for a better quality brand like Samsonite, Paklite or Antler. The last thing you need is a bag that breaks mid-trip - or does not survive the airline.

I noticed that Paklite has a good guide that shows all the dimensions/features of each bag - and if it is allowed as carry-on for use on domestic or international. Paklite Home

I bought a High Sierra rollabord last year.

Pretty sturdy bag and is also expandable. The only negative is the curved profile at the top does take up effective packing space.

Currently on sale at Rushfaster.com.au

Keep an eye on the weight of the empty bag. I like the Antler's for this reason, but others also have fairly light bags. It's important due to the low carry on weight allowance in/from Australia.

I also like Luggage Direct for their prices and range (but havn't bought anything from them yet). Keep in mind that if you're a Rydges PriorityGuest Member, you get 5% off at Luggage Direct as well https://www.rydges.com/priorityGuest/rpgAbout-Program-Partners.asp?Partner=4&Company=Luggage-Direct

thegurio, the best advice I can give is to consider your:
  1. Travel patterns (intl or domestic - if domestic, jet or Dash8) - refer to serfty's link that describes the size limits/allowances
  2. How much you need to take when you travel - will you be going hand luggage only? if so, will the one bag carry everything, or will you need to take another (like a backpack or laptop bag)?
  3. Given QF has a max weight of 7Kg, get the lightest bag you can get that still meets your size requirements (there is no point having a roll-aboard that is 5Kg empty for instance)
  4. Go for a good brand - but don't forget that you will be the one that is handling your carry on luggage, not the baggage handlers, so my view is that you can make a less durable bag work if you treat it with more care.
hope this helps with your decision... ;)

Flying QF9 MEL-SIN last night they were weighing rollaboards for everybody that i saw come or go through when i was filling in my departure form.
I had a satchel (sp?) and a small back pack (with 2 notebooks) and did not get looked at.

Although i have had a rollaboard weight in at 14kgs before i have some status and was allowed through in past times.

So just keep that in mind...

Similarly they weigh hand luggage at BNE int, down stairs where you fill in you immigration cards.

I wonder if the reason they're weighing hand luggage is to add it to the plane's weight calculations? Possibly check in has been told that if it look heavy they should weigh it so that it can be added to the numbers.

Is the weighing for all pax whY/J? I got pinged in MEL when they thought I was in whY but was actually travelling in J...

It is something they seem to have an accossional crackdown on. I have heard that the insurers were behind it once after someone got hurt during turbulence, but may just have been a story being spun!

Weighing hand luggage in MEL has been on and off for years now. I learnt a long time ago to make you bag look like it is light (swing it around a bit, keep your back straight etc) and they wont even weigh your bags, but if it looks heavy, they will weigh it every time - regardless of travel class.

Nope. They are not recording the weight nor checking which flight you are on.

I also notice checking agents are aware of this and asking some people to weight there carryon when checking in just to be sure they don't need to check it in rather than being sent back to do it.

As per dot's recommendation, purchased one last week, and took 2 days to arrive in PER. $15 postage.

Hopefully going to give it a road test next week..
